The citrus red mite, Panonychus citri, a major citrus pest distributed worldwide, has evolved severe resistance to various classes of chemical acaricides/insecticides including pyrethroids. It is well known that the resistance to pyrethroids is mainly caused by point mutations of voltage-gated sodium channel gene in a wide range of pests. However, increasing number of evidences support that pyr...

Modulation of plant proteome composition is an inevitable process to cope with the environmental challenges including heavy metal (HM) stress. Soil and water contaminated with hazardous metals not only cause permanent and irreversible health problems, but also result substantial reduction in crop yields. In course of time, plants have evolved complex mechanisms to regulate the uptake, mobilizat...

Studies in model organisms have identified regulatory processes that profoundly influence aging, many of which modulate resistance against environmental or metabolic stresses. In Caenorhabditis elegans, the transcription regulator SKN-1 is important for oxidative stress resistance and acts in multiple longevity pathways. SKN-1 is the ortholog of mammalian Nrf proteins, which induce Phase 2 deto...

The capacity of mosquitoes to resist insecticides threatens the control of diseases such as dengue and malaria. Until alternative control tools are implemented, characterizing resistance mechanisms is crucial for managing resistance in natural populations. Insecticide biodegradation by detoxification enzymes is a common resistance mechanism; however, the genomic changes underlying this mechanis...

The R2PI-TOF spectra of supersonically expanded rare gas/chiral arene heteroclusters have been rationalized in terms of the distortion of the pi-electron density reflecting the different dipole and quadrupole momenta induced in the rare gas atoms by interaction with the opposite pi-faces of the chiral arene itself.

Reduction of [U(Ts(Tol))(Cl)(μ-Cl)U(Ts(Tol))(THF)2] [2, Ts(Tol) = HC(SiMe2NAr')3; Ar' = 4-MeC6H4)] with KC8 in toluene afforded the new arene-bridged diuranium complex [{U(Ts(Tol))}2(μ-η(6):η(6)-C6H5Me)] (3); combined structural, spectroscopic, magnetic, and computational analyses unambiguously confirm that the uranium centres in 3 are in the +5 oxidation state and the toluene is a 10π-tetraanion.

Metabolic and toxicological data were obtained during the first 24 hours following severe and eventually fatal cyanide poisoning. Initial blood cyanide concentrations were 804 mumol/l but fell rapidly over 24 hours following cobalt edetate therapy to 15 mumol/l. However, plasma thiocyanate concentrations rose over 24 hours (147-267 mumol/l) suggesting continued tissue detoxification. The major ...

Iron containing monooxygenases play diverse roles in nature, ranging from the primary metabolic functions of alkane hydroxylases to the xenobiotic detoxification and secondary metabolic roles of cytochrome P450 enzymes..[1] Common to these enzymes is the ability to reductively activate molecular oxygen to generate highly electrophilic oxygen species, whose reactivity is comparable with that of ...

BACKGROUND Current biomass pretreatment by hydrothermal treatment (including acid hydrolysis, steam explosion, and high-temperature steaming) and ionic liquids generally generate inhibitors to the following fermentation process. Furfural is one of the typical inhibitors generated in hydrothermal treatment of biomass. Furfural could inhibit cell growth rate and decrease biofuel productivity of m...

Pesticides are known to affect insects metabolic rate and CO2 release patterns. In the presented paper metabolic rate and mortality of mealworms Tenebrio molitor L. exposed to four different insecticides was evaluated, to find out whether there is a relationship between mealworms sensitivity to pesticides and their metabolic rate. Tenebrio molitor mortality was determined after intoxication wit...
