UNLABELLED In Canadian law, pregnant women are held to owe no enforceable duties of care to their children before birth, but healthcare providers may be held accountable once children are born alive for causing injuries prenatally. When children are born in hospitals, recovered meconium may be tested without consent, but there may be an ethical duty to inform mothers. Meconium belongs to the ne...

Meconium ileus is the earliest manifestation of cystic fibrosis, and several investigations have been undertaken to determine its cause. In 1952, Buchanan and Rapoport showed that the ash content of abnormal meconium was twice as high as that ofnormal newborns, and that whereas normal meconium consisted of only 7% protein, this rose to 85% in meconium ileus. We here show that the proteins conce...

BACKGROUND Despite the common occurrence of intrauterine meconium passage and resultant meconium aspiration syndrome (MAS), controversies regarding the pathophysiology and use of appropriate preventive strategies abound. METHODS Databases from MEDLINE, MD Consult, and the Science Citation Index were searched from 1964 to the present to find relevant sources of information. RESULTS AND CONCL...

INTRODUCTION A case of giant meconium pseudocyst secondary to ileum volvulus perforation is presented. Conventional radiographic features of meconium peritonitis with secondary meconium pseudocyst formation are well described. Our case is unusual in comparison to other cases reported in the literature and needs to be reported because the meconium pseudocyst presented without the typical ultraso...

The hemodynamic effects of periodic acceleration (pG(z)), induced in the spinal axis with noninvasive motion ventilation (NIMV), were studied in a piglet model of pulmonary hypertension associated with meconium aspiration. Animals (n = 12) were anesthetized, paralyzed, intubated, and supported by conventional mechanical ventilation (CMV). Thirty minutes after tracheal instillation of meconium s...

The objective of the present study was to determine the possible prognostic factors which may explain the difference in the survival of patients with cystic fibrosis (CF) with and without meconium ileus. Over a period of 20 years, 127 patients with CF, whose diagnosis was confirmed by typical clinical characteristics and altered sweat chloride levels, were studied retrospectively. The patients ...

The pathophysiology of meconium aspiration syndrome(MAS) is related to mechanical obstruction of the airways and to chemical pneumonitis. Meconium is also suggested to cause functional deterioration of pulmonary surfactant. Recent studies have reported that meconium inhibits the physical surface properties of pulmonary surfactant, and that administration of exogenous surfactant may provide ther...

The aim of the study was to carry out a the laboratory diagnosis of fetal drug exposure. We focused on the analysis of meconium, as a specimen widely accepted for this purpose. In the preliminary study on meconium samples spiked with methamphetamine or morphine we tested the conditions for homogenization and isolation. Emit was used as a screening method and two dimensional HPTLC, GC/ECD, NPD a...

The first urine passed by a newborn infant who has inhaled meconium or meconium-stained amniotic fluid often contains a dark-coloured water-soluble substance, recognisable spectrophotometrically by an absorption band at about 405 nm. Spectrophotometric analysis of the first urine can in this way be used to diagnose preceding meconium aspiration.
