White-nose syndrome (WNS) of bats has devastated bat populations in eastern North America since its discovery in 2006. WNS, caused by the fungus Pseudogymnoascus destructans, has spread quickly in North America and has become one of the most severe wildlife epidemics of our time. While P. destructans is spreading rapidly in North America, nothing is known about the sexual capacity of this fungu...

Mating-type switching in the fission yeast Schizosaccharomyces pombe results in the transfer of genetic information from one of the two silent cassettes (mat2P or mat3M) to the transcriptionally active locus (mat1). The switching pattern is programmed by an imprinting event which restricts mat1 gene conversion to only one of the two sister cells, leading to asymmetric cell division. Biochemical...

mycosphaerella graminicola, the causal agent of septoria tritici blotch (stb), is a widespread and significant pathogen of wheat. to determine mating types, 89 isolates were collected randomly from wheat fields of khuzestan, east azerbaijan, ardebil, kermanshah and golestan provinces of iran, during 2006-7. dna was extracted based on standard protocols. multiplex pcr was conducted using two pai...

Rhynchosporium commune (formerly known as Rhynchosporium secalis), the causal agent of scald disease on barley, is known to spread asexually by splash dispersed conidia. However, there are multiple lines of evidence for the possibility of a clandestine sexual cycle occurrence in this species including extensive genotypic diversity, equal distribution of mating type alleles across the world and ...

Cells of the fission yeast Schizosaccharomyces pombe switch mating type by replacing genetic information at the transcriptionally active mat1 locus with sequences copied from one of two closely linked silent loci, mat2-P or mat3-M. By a process referred to as directionality of switching, cells predominantly switch to the opposite mat1 allele; the mat1-P allele preferentially recombines with mat...

Histoplasma capsulatum is a dimorphic fungal pathogen naturally found in the soil. Inhalation of conidia can result in pulmonary histoplasmosis and, in some cases, causes severe disseminated disease and death. This fungus is an ascomycete that has an anamorphic or asexual stage and a teleomorphic or sexual stage, known as Ajellomyces capsulatus, which results from (+) and (-) mating types. Sexu...

A novel mating-type switching-defective mutant showed a highly unstable rearrangement at the mating-type locus (mat1) in fission yeast. The mutation resulted from local amplification of a 134-bp DNA fragment by the mat1-switching phenomenon. We speculate that the rolling-circle-like replication and homologous recombination might be the general mechanisms for local genome region expansion.

BACKGROUND Filamentous fungi are frequently used as production platforms in industrial biotechnology. Most of the strains involved were known as reproducing exclusively asexually thereby preventing the application of conventional strain breeding techniques. In the last decade, evidence was obtained that a number of these imperfect fungi possess a sexual life cycle, too. Trichoderma reesei, an i...

The Cdk7/cyclin H/ménage-à-trois 1 (MAT1) heterotrimer has proposed functions in transcription as the kinase component of basal transcription factor TFIIH and is activated in adult hearts by Gq-, calcineurin-, and biomechanical stress-dependent pathways for hypertrophic growth. Using cardiac-specific Cre, we have ablated MAT1 in myocardium. Despite reduced Cdk7 activity, MAT1-deficient hearts g...

fusarium wilt caused by fusarium oxysporum schltdl. f.sp. phaseoli (fop), is one of the important diseases of the common bean in iran and many of the bean growing countries. incidence of the disease has been reported in tropical and semi-tropical regions of the world. this study was carried out to characterize genetic diversity of f. oxysporum isolates from the common bean by vegetative compati...
