Abstract 4-(2-Pyridylazo)resorcinol (PAR) sodium salt reacts with aromatic aldehydes and malononitrile in aqueous ethanol to form 2-amino-4-aryl-5-hydroxy-6-(2-pyridylazo)-4 H -chromene-3-carbonitriles.

The title compound, C(18)H(12)N(2), adopts an E conformation with the benzyl-idenemalononitrile and phenyl groups located on opposite sides of the C=C bond. The two phenyl rings are oriented at a dihedral angle of 62.49 (7)°.

The one-pot four-component reaction of benzohydrazide (2-picolinohydrazide), acetylenedicarboxylate, isatins and malononitrile (ethyl cyanoacetate) with triethylamine as base catalyst afforded functionalized 1-benzamidospiro[indoline-3,4'-pyridines] in good yields.
