INTRODUCTION Hepatocellular adenomas (HCAs), with a risk of malignant transformation into hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), classically develop in young women who are taking oral contraceptives. It is now clear that HCAs may also occur in men. However, it is rarely reported that HCAs with malignant transformation occur in male patients with non-cirrhotic livers. This study aimed to characterize t...
Epigenetic dysfunction is a known contributor in carcinogenesis, and is emerging as a mechanism involved in toxicant-induced malignant transformation for environmental carcinogens such as arsenicals or cadmium. In addition to aberrant DNA methylation of single genes, another manifestation of epigenetic dysfunction in cancer is agglomerative DNA methylation, which can participate in long-range e...
Background: Peripheral nerve sheath tumors are benign or malignant. Schwannoma is a benign peripheral nerve sheath tumor originating from the Schwann cells that slowly grows eccentric to the nerve axis. Malignant transformation of a schwannoma is rare. Case presentation: A 73 years old women that presented in our medical service for other medical problems was diagnosed with a tumor of the lower...
A rare case of malignant transformation of uterine leiomyoma is reported. A 54 year old lady, nulliparous and 2 years postmenopausal presented to gynecology clinic with a pelvi - abdominal mass and ultrasound scan suggestive of multiple uterine fibroid. Total abdominal hysterectomy performed. Histopathology report showed leiomyosarcomative changes from benign leiomyoma within the huge mass.
A critical requirement for the success of a multicellular organism is the ability to exquisitely regulate the growth of its component cells. Tumors, also called neoplasias, occur when that regulation is disturbed; the term neoplasia simply means “new growth.” The pathology community classifies neoplasias as benign or malignant based on morphologic features of the cells in the tumor, the presenc...
INTRODUCTION Carcinomatous degeneration is a rare and late complication developing decades after the diagnosis of chronic osteomyelitis. OBJECTIVES To present the results from a retrospective study of six cases of squamous cell carcinoma arising from chronic osteomyelitis. METHODS Six cases of chronic osteomyelitis related to cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma were identified. The cause and ...
Oral leukoplakia (OL) is a common, potentially malignant disorder of the oral cavity. SMAD4 was initially identified as a tumor suppressor and central mediator of transforming growth factor (TGF)-β signaling. In this study, we aimed to determine the expression patterns of SMAD4 in OL, its relationship with the degree of inflammation, and its clinical implications as a biomarker for OL malignant...
Giant condyloma acuminata are associated with malignant transformation in up to 50% of cases, high recurrence rate, and poor prognosis. Treatment strategies have included wide local excision, abdominopelvic resection, and addition of radiotherapy and adjuvant and/or neoadjuvant systemic chemotherapy.
OBJECTIVE To determine the recurrence and malignancy free survival time and associated factors with recurrence and malignant transformation of patients with low-grade gliomas after primary surgical resection. MATERIAL AND METHOD The present study was retrospective. Patients who underwent surgery and were diagnosed with low-grade gliomas between January 2000 and October 2009 were recruited. Ti...
Inherited bone marrow failure syndromes are a group of rare, heterogeneous genetic disorders with a risk of clonal and malignant myeloid transformation including clonal marrow cytogenetic abnormalities, myelodysplastic syndrome and acute myeloid leukemia. The clinical characteristics, risk classification, prognostic factors and outcome of clonal and malignant myeloid transformation associated w...
