In order to determine whether human granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF) can enhance phagocytosis. neutrophils were combined with Staphylococcus aureus (S aureus). and both the number of bacteria per neutrophil and the percent of neutrophils phagocytizing were assessed in the absence and presence of GM-CSF. Exposure to GM-CSF did not enable neutrophils to ingest unopsonized...

the present study aimed at investigating the beneficial effects of co-administering granulocyte colony–stimulating factor (g-csf) and stem cell factor (scf) in a model of chronic liver injury induced by thioacetamide (taa). biochemical and histopathology- cal examinations were performed on serum and liver specimens. at the end of the treatment period, the rats were anesthetized with ether, seru...

OBJECTIVE To characterize and evaluate hematopoietic colony-stimulating factor (CSF) use, including cost implications, in US academic health centers. DESIGN An observational study of patients who received granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) or granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF) from September 1 to October 15, 1993. SETTING Thirty academic health centers in t...

The nature of hematopoietic regulatory factors elaborated by the adherent (stromal) cells of long-term murine bone marrow cultures and the effect of in vitro stromal irradiation (XRT) on the production of these factors was investigated. Using an in situ stromal assay employing a double layer of semisolid agar, it was possible to demonstrate stromal elaboration of at least two colony-stimulating...

Mycobacterium lepraemurium grew progressively in monolayers of Proteose Peptone-elicited macrophages from C57BL/6 mice. Treatment of macrophage monolayers with gamma interferon led to an enhancement of growth of M. lepraemurium in macrophages. Treatment with tumor necrosis factor alpha or granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor led to restriction of mycobacterial growth in macrophages.

Transcription of early growth response gene-1 (Egr-1) is required for macrophage differentiation. Since granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF) induces macrophage proliferation as well as the transcription of Egr-1 mRNA, we characterized the induction of Egr-1 protein in murine peritoneal macrophages following treatment with GM-CSF. As determined by Western blot analysis, the ...

Mycobacterium tuberculosis modulation of macrophage cell death is a well-documented phenomenon, but its role during bacterial replication is less characterized. In this study, we investigate the impact of plasma membrane (PM) integrity on bacterial replication in different functional populations of human primary macrophages. We discovered that IFN-γ enhanced bacterial replication in macrophage ...

Macrophage populations resident in tissues and at sites of inflammation are heterogeneous and with local proliferation sometimes evident. Using the convenient murine peritoneal cavity as an inflammation model, the appearance of macrophage lineage cells was followed with time in both thioglycollate- and sodium periodate-induced exudates. The cells were characterized by their proliferative respon...
