Under the two-photon excitation, upconversion luminescent "INHIBIT" and "OR" logic gates of water-dispersed CdTe quantum dots (QDs) were constituted by conjugating the QDs with dopamine. This facilitated the development of a novel QDs-based upconversion luminescent probe for efficient turn-on sensing of glutathione.

The synthesis and characterisation of a new, highly luminescent inorganic cluster complex, (Bu4N)2[Mo6I8(NO3)6], are described. The complex possesses labile nitrato ligands and is therefore a useful precursor for the design of new luminescent materials. To exemplify this, functionalised polystyrene beads have been utilised as "polymeric ligands" to immobilise the molybdenum cluster complex.

The possible origin of luminescent properties of biodegradable photoluminescent polyesters (BPLPs) has been revealed by isolation and identification of luminescent agent from the hydrolyzate of BPLP. Elemental analysis, ESI-MS, (1)H, (13)C, 2D HSQC and COSY NMR spectra confirmed the chemical structure as 5-oxo-2,3-dihydro-5H-[1,3]thiazolo[3,2-a]pyridine-3,7-dicarboxylic acid (TPA).

Cell matrices were used as rich libraries to screen proteins for the production of luminescent silver and gold nanodots. The study indicates that the proteins for silver and gold nanodot protection are quite different. The identification of such proteins in future may enrich the family of luminescent nanodots.

RNA extracted from the luminescent bacterium Vibrio harveyi was translated in an Escherichia coli system. RNA from highly luminescent cells produced both alpha and beta subunits of luciferase in vitro, as confirmed by immunoprecipitation and partial proteolysis. RNA from cells before induction of luminescence did not direct luciferase synthesis.

New luminescent dinuclear rhenium(I) tricarbonyl complex-PNA conjugates have been synthesized through a reliable solid-phase synthetic methodology. Their photophysical properties have been measured. The most luminescent Re-PNA conjugate 7 showed interesting two-photon absorption (TPA) properties, that were exploited for imaging experiments, to demonstrate its easy uptake into living cells.

We report here a luminescent metal-organic framework [Zn3(TDPAT)(H2O)3] [TDPAT = 2,4,6-tris(3,5-dicarboxyl phenylamino)-1,3,5-triazine] exhibiting strong luminescence at room temperature, which can serve as the first case of a dual functional luminescent sensor for quantitatively detecting the concentration of nitrobenzene and temperature.

We report herein the mechanochromic luminescent property of a dendritic polypeptide with a fluorescent aromatic moiety at the focal point. The different luminescent property of 1 under mechanical stimulus is attributed to the switch of self-assembled structures. Moreover, the photoluminescence property of 1 also depends on the thermal history.

Oxygen-deficient luminescent mesoporous silica nanoparticles with uniform morphology/size and integrated mesoporosity-luminescent property in a single nanoparticle are successfully synthesized by a bottom-up self-assembly route followed by a post-calcination process, and can be used to facilely load/deliver drugs into cells and luminescently image cells.

A simple strategy has been developed to synthesize highly luminescent thiolated Au@Ag nanoclusters (NCs) by using Ag(i) ions to bridge small Au(i)-thiolate motifs on the weakly luminescent thiolated Au NCs, leading to the formation of large Au(i)/Ag(i)-thiolate motifs on the NC surface and thus generating strong luminescence via aggregation-induced emission.
