A Gd complex based on a polyphosphonated pyridyl ligand shows a very high stability in aqueous solution (log K(EuL) = 25.7), a high relaxivity (8.5 mM(-1) s(-1) at 25 °C and 20 MHz) and a marked and selective relaxivity enhancement (37%) in the presence of Mg(2+), opening interesting perspectives for the design of cation responsive contrast agents.

The relaxivity of a magnetically responsive Gd complex can be controlled by non-covalent molecular recognition with a water-soluble deep cavitand. Lowered relaxivity is conferred by a self-assembled micellar "off state", and the contrast can be regenerated by addition of a superior guest.

A novel first-generation Ca2+ sensitive contrast agent, Gd-DOPTRA has been synthesized and characterized. The agent shows approximately 100% relaxivity enhancement upon addition of Ca2+. The agent is selective and sensitive to Ca2+ also in the presence of Mg2+ and Zn2+. The relaxivity studies carried out in physiological fluids prove the prospects of the agent for in vivo measurements.

The water soluble tris-aqua complex [Gd(dhqN-SO3)(H2O)3](3-) based on a hexadentate hydroxyquinoline ligand shows high thermodynamic stability and high relaxivity (12.54 mM(-1) s(-1) at 1.2 T). Its non-covalent confinement in 25 nm silica nanoparticles prevents transmetallation and endogenous anion binding and leads to higher relaxivity over a wide range of magnetic fields.

Introduction MR contrast agents act indirectly to relax water protons. The efficiency of contrast agents with respect to relaxation is termed relaxivity (r1 = Δ(1/T1)/[Gd]) and depends on a number of molecular parameters including the hydration state of the molecule and its molecular reorientation rate. These molecular parameters can sometimes be altered by environmental factors such as pH chan...

Close monitoring of liver iron content is necessary to prevent iron overload in transfusion-dependent anemias. Liver biopsy remains the gold standard; however, MRI potentially offers a noninvasive alternative. Iron metabolism and storage is complicated and tissue/disease-specific. This report demonstrates that iron distribution may be more important than iron speciation with respect to MRI sign...

MRI detectable and targeted quantum dots were developed. To that aim, quantum dots were coated with paramagnetic and pegylated lipids, which resulted in a relaxivity, r(1), of nearly 2000 mM(-1)s(-1) per quantum dot. The quantum dots were functionalized by covalently linking alphavbeta3-specific RGD peptides, and the specificity was assessed and confirmed on cultured endothelial cells. The bimo...

In this study, a peptide-based dual-targeting magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) contrast agent (S8) was designed and synthesized. Arg-Gly-Asp (RGD) and Asn-Gly-Arg (NGR) were combined in the targeting vector so as to allow binding, on the surface of tumor cells, to integrin αvβ3 and aminopeptidase N (CD13), respectively. The longitudinal relaxivity (r1) value of S8 was 8.297 mM-1sec-1 at a magne...

Laser atomic magnetometry is a portable and low-cost yet highly sensitive method for low magnetic field detection. In this work, the atomic magnetometer was used in a remote-detection geometry to measure the relaxivity of aqueous gadolinium-diethylenetriamine pentaacetic acid Gd(DTPA) at the Earth's magnetic field (40 μT). The measured relaxivity of 9.7±2.0 s(-1) mM(-1) is consistent with field...
