the lipid content and composition of the reef-building coral acropora downingi, the largest coral reef of hengam island, were examined throughout a year. the results showed that the lipid content of a. downingi significantly differs in different seasons (t-test, p< 0.05). depending on the season and spawning times, the lipid content of a. downingi ranged from 16.5 to 37.7 % (dry weight). the to...

Surface pressure and fluorescence intensity of pheophytin containing lipid-monolayers are measured simultaneously at the air-water interface. A phase separation into two distinct phases is reported. Phase 1 exists of pheophytin domains whereas phase 2 is a lipid domain containing pheophytin in molar content between 2 % and 15 %, depending on the state of the lipid. The transition of the pheophy...

Microscopic fluorescent samples of interest to cell and molecular biology are commonly embedded in an aqueous medium near a solid surface that is coated with a thin film such as a lipid multilayer, collagen, acrylamide, or a cell wall. Both excitation and emission of fluorescent single molecules near film-coated surfaces are strongly affected by the proximity of the coated surface, the film thi...

I studied the transformation between inverse bicontinuous cubic phases (QII) from diamond (QII(D)) to primitive (QII(P)) in a single-crystal region of monoolein. X-ray diffraction data reveal that the crystallographic orientation of QII(P) rotates 55° around the [01̅1] axis from QII(D). This indicates that one direction of the four-branched water channels in the QII(D) phase is preserved in the ...

Quantum dots (QDs) have long promised to revolutionize fluorescence detection to include even applications requiring simultaneous multi-species detection at single molecule sensitivity. Despite the early promise, the unique optical properties of QDs have not yet been fully exploited in e. g. multiplex single molecule sensitivity applications such as single particle tracking (SPT). In order to f...

We present a simple method for the multiplexed formation of droplet interface bilayers (DIBs) using a mechanically operated linear acrylic chamber array. To demonstrate the functionality of the chip design, a lipid membrane permeability assay is performed. We show that multiple, symmetric DIBs can be created and separated using this robust low-cost approach.

A variety of different DNA polymers were electrophoretically driven through the nanopore of an alpha-hemolysin channel in a lipid bilayer. Single-channel recording of the translocation duration and current flow during traversal of individual polynucleotides yielded a unique pattern of events for each of the several polymers tested. Statistical data derived from this pattern of events demonstrat...

Molecular visualization of structural information obtained from computer simulations is an important part of research work flow. A good visualization technique should be capable of eliminating redundant information and highlight important effects clarifying the key phenomena in the system. Current methods of presenting structural data are mostly limited to variants of the traditional ball-and-s...

Over recent years, much progress has been made in the identification and characterization of factors involved in the biosynthesis of integral membrane proteins of the helix-bundle type. In addition, our knowledge of membrane protein structure and the forces stabilizing helix-helix interactions in a lipid environment is expanding rapidly. However, it is still not clear how a membrane protein fol...

We report on the surface rheology of cross-linked F-actin networks associated with a lipid monolayer at the air-water interface of a Langmuir monolayer. The rheological measurements are made using a Couette cell. These data demonstrate that the network has a finite elastic modulus that grows as a function of the cross-linking concentration. We also note that under steady-state flow the system b...
