The knowledge about the placement and appearance of lane markings is a prerequisite for the creation of maps with high precision, necessary for autonomous driving, infrastructure monitoring, lane-wise traffic management, and urban planning. Lane markings are one of the important components of such maps. Lane markings convey the rules of roads to drivers. While these rules are learned by humans,...
Drivers' behavior is one of the most important factors in traffic safety. Understanding of this issue and its effective factors can be helpful to reduce the influences of human factors on traffic accidents. The objective of this study is to apply Manchester driver behavior questionnaire (DBQ) to a group of drivers who have overtaken on two-lane rural roads and to analyze their behavior. Also, t...
This study evaluates the impact of the 65-mph speed limit on traffic safety. Using data for the years 1981 to 1995 for all 50 states, a pooled time series analysis is conducted. Separate models are estimated for state fatality rates on four categories of roads: rural interstate highways, rural noninterstate roads, all roads except for rural interstate highways, and all roads. It is reported tha...
ITE JOURNAL / SEPTEMBER 1998 DESPITE PROGRESS IN REDUCing motor vehicle crash deaths and injuries in the United States, sharp horizontal curves situated on narrow twolane highways—a common roadway design feature—pose a significant safety threat. According to data published by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, nearly 80 percent of all fatal crashes in the United States occur on...
INTRODUCTION Rural Road connectivity is a key component of rural development, since it promotes access to economic and social services, thereby generating increased agricultural productivity, non-agriculture employment as well as non-agricultural productivity, which in turn expands rural growth opportunities and real income through which poverty can be reduced. A study (Fan et al. 1999) carried...
FOREWORD The goal of this research was to evaluate and estimate the effectiveness of improved curve delineation on rural two-lane undivided roads as one of the strategies in the Evaluation of Low-Cost Safety Improvements Pooled Fund Study (ELCSI-PFS), Phase II. This strategy is intended to reduce the frequency of crashes related to lack of driver awareness approaching curves as well as while na...

The ALVINN (Autonomous Land Vehicle In a Neural Network) project addresses the problem of training arti cial neural networks in real time to perform di cult perception tasks. ALVINN is a back-propagation network designed to drive the CMU Navlab, a modi ed Chevy van. This paper describes the training techniques which allow ALVINN to learn in under 5 minutes to autonomously control the Navlab by ...
The paper contributes to the detection of driving on the wrong side of the road by addressing in particular multi-lane road situations. We suggest a solution using video data of a single camera only for identifying the current lane of the ego-vehicle. GPS data are used for knowing defined constraints on driving directions for the current road.
