This research studies the characterization of activated carbon from tamarind seed with KOH activation. The effects of 0.5 : 1-1.5 : 1 KOH : tamarind seed charcoal ratios and 500-700°C activation temperatures were studied. FTIR, SEM-EDS, XRD, and BET were used to characterize tamarind seed and the activated carbon prepared from them. Proximate analysis, percent yield, iodine number, methylene bl...

In this study the effects of phosphate, potassium, yeast extract, and trace metals on the growth of Mucor indicus and chitosan, chitin, and metabolite production by the fungus were investigated. Maximum yield of chitosan (0.32 g/g cell wall) was obtained in a phosphate-free medium. Reversely, cell growth and ethanol formation by the fungus were positively affected in the presence of phosphate. ...

The trimethylamine content of most marine fish, especially the gadoid species, is internationally accepted as an index ofspoilage. However, ammonia, dimethylamine, and other aminesalso contribute to the trimethylamine value. Variations in the conditions of the three current methods used to analyze for trimethylamine content were studied in detail to determine the best condition to extract trime...

biochar and activated carbon, as carbon-rich porous materials, have wide environmental applications. in the present research, rice husk (rh) was used for preparation of biochar at 400, 600, and 800 °c under simple pyrolysis, physically-activated carbon with water steam, chemically-activated carbon with potassium hydroxide (koh), and physiochemically-activated carbon with koh and steam. physical...

Studies were done to determine the usefulness of dilute alkali (KOH) treatment of meat samples for direct isolation of Yersinia enterocolitica and Yersinia pseudotuberculosis, without enrichment. Virulent Y. enterocolitica and Y. pseudotuberculosis in pork contaminated with 10(2), 10(3), and 10(4) cells per g survived the direct KOH treatment and were never recovered by using KOH postenrichment...

Bromination of 5,6-dimethoxyindan-1-one with Br(2) in acetic acid at room temperature produced exclusively the corresponding 2,4-dibromo compound in 95% yield. Reaction of 5,6-dimethoxyindan-1-one with Br(2) in the presence of KOH, K(2)CO(3) or Cs(2)CO(3 )at ~0 degrees C( )gave the monobrominated product 4-bromo-5,6-dimethoxyindan-3-one in 79%, 81% and 67% yield, respectively. 5,6-Dihydroxyinda...

Retrospective evaluation of potassium hydroxide plus calcofluor white (KOH+CFW), Gram, Giemsa, and modified Ziehl-Neelsen (1% H(2)SO(4), cold) stains for the detection of microsporidia in corneal scrapings from 30 patients showed KOH+CFW and acid-fast stains to be most efficient (29/30 [96.7%] and 28/30 [93.3%], respectively) in the diagnosis of microsporidial keratitis.
