A hybrid Monte Carlo molecular dynamics technique is developed that gives equations of motion for an isothermal system. Test results for a Lennard-Jones fluid are shown to be in good agreement with the known equation of state. The physical interpretation of the procedure and the extension to isothermal–isobaric systems is also discussed. © 2002 American Institute of Physics. @DOI: 10.1063/1.147...
The traditional application of the classical homogeneous nucleation theory (CNT) to the condensation in rapidly expanding flows involves the use of the steady-state nucleation rate. Since this rate is derived under the assumption of both steady-state and isobaric/isothermal conditions, the applicability of CNT to highly nonequilibrium environments may be questionable. In addition, the usual str...
The interactions of an E/A = 70-MeV 9C beam with a Be target was used to populate levels in Be, B, and C isotopes, which undergo decay into many-particle exit channels. The decay products were detected in the HiRA array and the level energies were identified from their invariant mass. Correlations between the decay products were examined to deduce the nature of the decays, specifically to what ...
The energy dependence of forward pion double charge exchange reactions on light nuclei is studied for both the Ground State transition and the Double-Isobaric-Analog-State transitions. A common characteristic of these double reactions is a resonance-like peak around 50 MeV pion lab energy. This peak arises naturally in a two-step process in the conventional pion-nucleon system with proper handl...

Pion double charge exchange ~DCX! on nuclear targets has been extensively studied, both experimentally and theoretically, throughout the last two decades. Because at least two nucleons must be involved in the process, the study of DCX is a natural tool for exploring nucleon-nucleon correlations. In the course of these studies at low energies, a prominent peak in the (p,p) cross section in the n...
Ion mobility/time-of-flight techniques have been used to analyze mixtures of isotopically labeled peptides. The isotopic labels were generated by treatment of peptides with N-acetoxysuccinimide (or the deuterated analogue), which results in acetylation (or deuterioacetylation) of the primary amines (i.e., the N-terminus and lysine residues). The relative concentrations of a peptide in each samp...
Excitation spectra ∆ET of T = 0, 1, 2 states in even-even (e-e) and odd-odd (o-o) N = Z nuclei are analyzed within a mean-field based model involving isovector and isoscalar pairing interactions and the iso-cranking formalism applied to restore approximately isospin symmetry. It is shown that T = 0 states in o-o and T = 1 states in e-e nuclei correspond to two-quasiparticle, time-reversal symme...
l-2,5-Dihydrophenylalanine is extensively incorporated as a phenylalanine analogue into cell proteins. Phenylalanine-requiring Escherichia coli ATCC 9723f and sarcoma 180 grow at normal rates initially with the analogue and maximally replace 65 and 33%, respectively, of phenylalanine in the peptide residues of their cell protein without death. With the analogue alone growth of E. coli becomes n...
