Background: Patients with prolonged neutropenia and/or severe underlying immunosuppression are at thegreatest risk for disseminated aspergillosis. This study was undertaken to determine the incidence of invasiveaspergillosis by Platelia Aspergillus enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay ELISA kit in high risk children admitted tothe hematology ward of Dr. Faghihi hospital, Shiraz University of Medic...
Ambruticins are a family of polyketides. The antifungal activity of an ambruticin, KOSN-2079, was tested in the mouse model of invasive aspergillosis. KOSN-2079 significantly reduced pulmonary fungal burdens and improved survival over that with the vehicle control. These results support the continued development of ambruticins as antifungal agents.
We compared an Aspergillus fumigatus-specific Taqman real-time PCR assay for the diagnosis of invasive aspergillosis (IA) with the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay Platelia Aspergillus method. Patients with proven or probable IA had positive results with at least one of the two methods. The PCR method seems to be more specific, and a combination of the two should improve the diagnosis of IA.
Pseudomembranous necrotising bronchial aspergillosis is a variety of invasive aspergillosis found in immunosuppressed patients. A case is presented of a 66 year old woman whose only underlying disease was chronic airways limitation. The pathological findings and clinical implications are discussed.
Two patients with invasive aspergillosis had unusual endobronchial appearances at fibreoptic bronchoscopy. Diagnosis was achieved by endobronchial biopsy.
Invasive aspergillosis is an uncommon opportunistic infection usually seen in immunocompromised patients. Despite extensive therapeutic measures the outcome is usually unfavourable. We report a case of invasive aspergillosis in an immunocompetent individual.
Filamentous fungi (moulds) are ubiquitous soil inhabitants whose conidia are inhaled into the respiratory tract, where they may cause life-threatening infections. Among these infections is invasive aspergillosis, which is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in the severely immunocompromised. Risk factors for invasive aspergillosis include prolonged and severe neutropenia, hematopoietic ste...
Invasive pulmonary aspergillosis (IPA) is difficult to diagnose because it requires histopathology and tissue culture, as well as due to its rapid progression. Invasive pulmonary aspergillosis is the primary cause of pulmonary mycosis in China, which can occur in patients with neutrophil deficiency, leukaemia or lymphoma, malignant tumours, or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease with long-ter...
