In 12 h fasted rats, rates of muscle protein synthesis were stimulated by refeeding for 1 h and by intragastric or intravenous infusion of an amino acid plus glucose mixture for 1 hr, but not by intravenous infusion of amino acids alone for 1 h. Intravenous injection of anti-insulin serum suppressed the response to feeding and to intragastric infusion, but not to intravenous infusion. It is con...

The number of large platelets pre-treatment was the only independent predictor of the 24 hour-platelet increase.

How high doses of intravenous IgG (IVIG) suppress autoimmune diseases remains unresolved. We have recently shown that the antiinflammatory activity of IVIG can be attributed to a minor species of IgGs that is modified with terminal sialic acids on their Fc-linked glycans. Here we propose that these Fc-sialylated IgGs engage a unique receptor on macrophages that, in turn, leads to the upregulati...

Not that long ago, aspirin, heparin, and warfarin were the only available antithrombotic agents for treating cardiovascular disease patients at risk of thrombotic events. These agents are still used in several places around the world, and it is remarkable how difficult it was to discover other agents that are more effective and/or safer. Since the mid-1980s we have been witnessing an explosion ...

N-Acetylprocainamide (NAPA), a class III antiarrhythmic drug, caused torsade de pointes in a 72 year old woman who had this arrhythmia on two previous occasions while being treated with quinidine and disopyramide. Initial evaluation with an intravenous infusion of NAPA indicated a favorable antiarrhythmic response. The QTC interval was prolonged, but the 2.4 ms/microgram per ml incremental QTC ...
