S. Liuti ∗ and S. K. Taneja † University of Virginia, Charlottesville, Virginia 22901, USA. Abstract We study the structure of generalized parton distributions in spin 0 nuclei within a microscopic approach for nuclear dynamics. GPDs can be used on one side as tools to unravel the deep inelastic transverse structure of nuclei in terms of both transverse spatial and transverse momentum degrees o...

It is observed that strings in AdS5 × S and membranes in AdS7 × S exhibit long range phase interactions. Two well separated membranes dragged around one another in AdS acquire phases of 2π/N . The same phases are acquired by a well separated F and D string dragged around one another. The phases are shown to correspond to both the standard and a novel type of Aharonov-Bohm effect in the dual fie...

Haptic feedback for microand nanomanipulation is a research area of growing importance with many potential applications in microand biotechnology. Past research often involves the coupling of atomic force microscopes to haptic devices, but the results are not satisfactory. We propose to adopt a different approach, which consists of contactless manipulation, in particular by using optical tweeze...

The McGurk effect was studied on 3 groups of subjects differing in age: pre-schoolers (mean: 6 years), elementary-school 4-graders (mean: 11 years) and adults (mean: 24 years). The stimuli included audio-visual combinations of syllables /pa/, /ta/, /ka/, /ba/, /da/, /ga/. The combination of auditorily presented (A) bilabials with visually presented (V) velars, was reported by some subjects as a...

Space manipulators mounted on a on-o thrustercontrolled base are envisioned to assist in the assembly and maintenance of space structures. When handling large payloads, manipulator joint and link exibility become important, for it can result in payloadattitude controller fuel-replenishing dynamic interactions. In this paper, the dynamic behavior of a exiblejoint manipulator on a freeying base i...

We study phases of five-dimensional three-charge black holes with a circle in their transverse space. In particular, when the black hole is localized on the circle we compute the corrections to the metric and corresponding thermodynamics in the limit of small mass. When taking the near-extremal limit, this gives the corrections to the finite entropy of the extremal three-charge black hole as a ...

Time dispersion plays an important role in the propagation of femtosecond pulses through water. The combined e ects of time dispersion, radial di raction and the Kerr nonlinearity on the pulse propagation are analyzed and it is shown that normal time dispersion leads to signi cant temporal broadening of ultrashort pulses and that it increases the threshold power for catastrophic self-focusing.

While non-point nutrient loads are important determinants of biological productivity in Southeastern Piedmont impoundments, productivity can be attenuated by concomitant sediment loads that reduce the biological availability of these nutrients. A biogeochemical model is proposed that explicitly accounts for the effects of sedimentenutrient interactions on multiple components of phytoplankton me...

Some of the most important patterns of change that we encounter in our everyday world – global warming, fluctuations in the unemployment rate, voter trends – are produced by the interactions and accumulation of many different individuals and events. This interactive poster will demonstrate NetLogo HotLink Replay, a computational tool designed to provide students a context to reconcile large-sca...

Errors pertaining to the following physical theories are discussed: the Dirac magnetic monopole theory; the KleinGordon equation; the Yukawa theory of nuclear force; the idea of Vector Meson Dominance; the Aharonov-Bohm effects; the idea of diffraction-free electromagnetic beams and Quantum Chromodynamics. Implications of the theoretical errors are discussed briefly. In particular, relations be...
