The introduction of High Definition Television (HDTV) asks for spatial up-conversion techniques in order to enable the displaying of standard definition material (SDTV). Recently, X. Li and M. Orchard proposed the “New Edge-Directed Interpolation” (NEDI) algorithm for high quality up-scaling of natural images. In this paper, we first analyze and evaluate this technique, and then propose a numbe...

This paper presents the results from two studies which used a dual-task methodology to measure an audience's experience of immersion while watching video under typical television viewing conditions. Immersion was measured participants watched either high dynamic range, wide color gamut or standard video, in definition ultra-high definition. Other parameters were carefully and controlled. The st...

There is a widespread feeling among formal semanticists that, with suitable manipulations, any semantics can be made compositional. The following quote is representative: “. . . it [compositionality] being a methodological starting point, it is always possible to satisfy compositionality by simply adjusting the syntactic and/or semantic tools one uses, unless that is, the latter are constrained...

There is no consensus yet on the definition of semantic information. This paper contributes to the current debate by criticising and revising the Standard Definition of semantic Information (SDI) as meaningful data, in favour of the Dretske-Grice approach: meaningful and well-formed data constitute semantic information only if they also qualify as contingently truthful. After a brief introducti...

A fundamental task for reasoning with preferences is the following: given input preference information from a user, and outcomes α and β, should we infer that the user will prefer α to β? For CP-nets and related comparative preference formalisms, inferring a preference of α over β using the standard definition of derived preference appears to be extremely hard, and has been proved to be PSPACEc...

We prove a theorem stating that any semantics can be encoded as a compositional semantics, which means that, essentially, the standard definition of compositionality is formally vacuous. We then show that when compositional semantics is required to be ”systematic” (that is, the meaning function cannot be arbitrary, but must belong to some class), it is possible to distinguish between compositio...

Conglomerates are generalized frameworks for informetric research. In this article, the h-index of a conglomerate is defined and it is shown how this construction generalizes the standard definition of the h-index. It is further shown how non-trivial constructions, such as Prathap’s h-indices, fit well into a conglomerate framework. An example illustrates the use of the conglomerate framework.

A standard definition of dynamic pricing in airline markets typically focuses on how fares evolve over the booking period that precedes a flight’s take-off. Our research shows that such a definition is lacking because it fails to connect fare changes to some guiding principles of revenue management, defined as the combined methods used by carriers to set their fares. Once such a connection is m...

We investigate the existence of normalizers of subobjects in pointed categories defined in the expected way, as motivated by the standard definition used in the category of groups. We show that, for a semi-abelian category C: (a) if the category C2 of morphisms in C is action representable, then so is the category Mon(C) of monomorphisms in C; (b) if Mon(C) is action representable, then normali...

This article is about erroneous attempts to weaken the standard definition of unbounded Kasparov module (or spectral triple). This issue has been addressed previously, but here we present concrete counterexamples to claims in the literature that Fredholm modules can be obtained from these weaker variations of spectral triple. Our counterexamples are constructed using self-adjoint extensions of ...
