In the mol-ecule of the title compound, C(16)H(14)O(3), the aromatic rings are oriented at a dihedral angle of 72.02 (6)°. The heterocyclic ring adopts a twisted conformation. In the crystal structure, there are C-H⋯π contacts between the heterocyclic and phenyl rings, and between the methyl group and methoxy-phenyl ring.

Amidase-catalyzed desymmetrization of meso-N-heterocyclic dicarboxamides under very mild conditions provided a highly efficient and practical method for the preparation of enantiomerically pure carbamoyl-substituted heterocyclic amino acids that were unique and versatile platforms for the construction of both antipodes of aza-sugar containing nucleoside analogs.

Arylsulfinyl groups direct the metal-free, regiospecific, nucleophilic ortho-allylation of pyrroles and pyrazoles. Mechanistic studies support the intermediacy of allylsulfonium salts that undergo facile thio-Claisen rearrangement onto the heterocyclic ring, giving products of coupling. The strategy has been adapted to allow regiospecific propargylation of the heterocyclic substrates.

Substituted imidazolinones containing heterocyclic carboxylic acids as substituents and possessing herbicidal properties were synthesized by cyclization of 2-amino-2,3-dimethylbutyramide with heterocyclic ethyl dicarboxylates under mild conditions. The use of NaH as base leads to a significant increase in the reaction rate and allows the preparation of the target compounds in high yields.

We report the strategic use of cyclohexyne and the more elusive intermediate, cyclopentyne, as a tool for the synthesis of new heterocyclic compounds. Experimental and computational studies of a 3-substituted cyclohexyne are also described. The observed regioselectivities are explained by the distortion/interaction model.
