Background: Virulence of pathogenic bacteria is often determined by their ability to adapt to stress. Result: The Brucella abortus general stress response (GSR) system is required for chronic mammalian infection, and is regulated by phosphorylation and proteolysis. Conclusion: The B. abortus GSR signaling pathway has multiple layers of post-translational control, and is a determinant of chronic...

We present a case study on the use of the +CAL specification language as applied to the process interaction semantics of the MPI standard. We also present preliminary, but highly encouraging, results from a generalization of the notion of cluster-based partial-order reduction in the context of +CAL model checking. Called generalized static reduction (GSR), this approach takes advantage of the c...

We show that winning the game New Age Solitaire only depends on the number of rising sequences in the deck used. The probability of winning for the special case of a new deck that is shuffled using the GSR-shuffle (and two variants) are studied. We show that this game pinpoints the Achilles heel of the GSR-shuffle as is demonstrated using the variation distance.

Imaging and analyzing gunshot residue (GSR) particles using the scanning electron microscope equipped with an energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer (SEM-EDS) is a standard technique that can provide important forensic evidence, but the discrimination power of this technique is limited due to low sensitivity to trace elements and difficulties in obtaining quantitative results from small particles...

In an interpretation of the group therapy situation as a complex stimulus field, 37 therapy sessions were studied with reference to the nature of the association between a physiological parameter (GSR) and dimensions of social interaction. The group, consisting of a nurse-therapist and two schizophrenic patients, was observed and coded in terms of 11 social categories. The social behavior of th...

In this paper, we propose a method for using mobile laser-scanning data to estimate the green space ratio (GSR), a landscape index that represents the proportion of green area to the whole-view area. The proposed method first classifies and segments vegetation using voxel-based and shape-based approaches. Vertical planar-surface objects are excluded, and randomly distributed objects are extract...

We investigated the effect of galvanic skin response (GSR) biofeedback training on seizure frequency in patients with treatment-resistant epilepsy. Eighteen patients with drug-refractory epilepsy were randomly assigned either to an active GSR biofeedback group (n = 10) or to a sham control biofeedback group (n = 8). Biofeedback training significantly reduced seizure frequency in the active biof...

Gene-set analysis aims to identify differentially expressed gene sets (pathways) by a phenotype in DNA microarray studies. We review here important methodological aspects of gene-set analysis and illustrate them with varying performance of several methods proposed in the literature. We emphasize the importance of distinguishing between 'self-contained' versus 'competitive' methods, following Go...
