Gaseous supersaturation can be induced under steady-state conditions when two inert gases are transmitted in opposite directions across any system comprising a diffusion barrier adjacent to a zone of limited convective capacity. This has many implications for bubble formation in vivo and can explain the occurence of symptoms of decompression sickness without decompression.

In the presented work CaCO3 powders were produced by controlled fast precipitation through gaseous carbon dioxide absorption in calcium hydroxide slurry. This multiphase reaction was conducted in a modified prototypical rotating disk reactor (RDR). The concept is based on continuous formation of thin liquid films at a surface of rotating discs where the mass transfer proceeds in diffusion-conve...

Submitted for the MAR13 Meeting of The American Physical Society Diffusion of gaseous and supercritical CO2 through polycarbonate 1 MICHAEL GOODMAN, RAHMI OZISIK, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute — The design of polymeric materials for applications such as separation membranes and nanostructured foams requires prediction of gas transport properties under a wide range of pressures. In the curren...

The development and propagation of detonations is examined in the presence of diffusive processes. The difference between the inviscid and viscous models is quantitatively evaluated for one-dimensional propagating detonations. First, an investigation of viscous effects is performed on one-dimensional pulsating unsupported Chapman-Jouguet detonations using a simplified one step kinetics model fo...

BACKGROUND We sub-divided a cohort of 6820 workers at the Paducah (KY) Gaseous Diffusion Plant (PGDP) which was traced from 1953 to 2003. The subdivisions were made to assess the mortality risks in a sub-group of workers employed solely during the plant's refit period, a time of suspected higher exposure to metal dusts (nickel, arsenic, chromium and uranium) and trichloroethylene. METHODS Thi...

Vol.32, No.3, 1986 563 quires a 30-mm wait after reconstitution; the reagents are then pipetted, and the assay is performed in the CentrifiChem centrifugal analyzer in 8 mm. Duplicate blank assays are not required. Samples with total creatine kinase activity concentration (CK-T) >2000 U/L must be diluted. The INH procedure was less affected by AK released from erythrocytes and by reconstituted ...

• In studies of gas exchange between the lung and the pulmonary circulation it is generally assumed that the principal exchange takes place at the level of the pulmonary capillaries. The work presented here shows that some gaseous exchange can occur as well between the lung and vessels of macroscopic size. Hydrogen gas when administered to a subject by inhalation can be detected in the pulmonar...

Applying pore size analysis, Monte Carlo simulations, and transition state theory, we study the molecular sieving properties of recently discovered crystalline exotic cubic carbon allotropes (Hu et al., J. Phys. Chem. C, 2012, 116, 24233-24238) at 298 K and infinite dilution. The fcc-C10 cubic carbon crystal shows unusual molecular sieving characteristics. The carbon cavities of the fcc-C10 cub...

LOW-TEMPERATURE CARBURIZATION is a gaseous carburization process performed at atmospheric pressure, at temperatures where the kinetics of substitutional diffusion are very slow. Low-temperature carburization hardens the surface of austenitic stainless steels through the diffusion of interstitial carbon, without the formation of carbides. The surface must be activated, by modification and remova...
