We present here results of audio-visual to articulatory inversion for French fricatives embedded into VCVs. The inversion technique is evaluated using both experimental and synthetic data. The final synthesis is assessed by a perceptual categorisation test. Synthetic stimuli have similar scores as natural ones.

Acoustic waveforms of the strident fricatives /s/, /z/, /integral of/, and /3/ spoken by two native American English speakers are analyzed using modern chaotic analysis techniques. Fricative data are extracted from both intervocalic and sustained utterances. For comparison, acoustic waveforms of the vowels /a/, /i/, and /u/ are also analyzed. For 44% of the unvoiced fricative tokens in VCV cont...

OBJECTIVE To investigate a set of acoustic features and classification methods for the classification of three groups of fricative consonants differing in place of articulation. METHOD A support vector machine (SVM) algorithm was used to classify the fricatives extracted from the TIMIT database in quiet and also in speech babble noise at various signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs). Spectral feature...

Source models for fricative consonants are derived based on aerodynamic principles of sound generation, in conjunction with vocal-tract models obtained from MRI data. Results indicate that a linear source-filter model is adequate for capturing essential spectral characteristics of sustained fricatives below 10 kHz. The hybrid source models employ a combination of acoustic monopole and dipole so...

Speakers may adapt the phonetic details of their productions when they anticipate perceptual difficulty or comprehension failure on the part of a listener. Previous research suggests that a speaking style known as clear speech is more intelligible overall than casual, conversational speech for a variety of listener populations. However, it is unknown whether clear speech improves the intelligib...

Consonant gemination in Italian affricates and fricatives was investigated, completing the overall study of consonants. Results analysis other consonant categories, i.e. stops, nasals, liquids, showed that closure duration for stops nasals form most salient acoustic cues to gemination. Frequency energy domain parameters were not significantly affected by a systematic way all classes. on confirm...

The present work aims at demonstrating the feasibility of high quality articulatory synthesis for fricative consonants, and in particular to match a given reference subject. The synthesiser includes an articulatory model based on cineradiographic pictures of the subject, and a simplified aerodynamic model. Two approaches have been used: direct articulatory copy synthesis, and copy synthesis by ...

Inversion aims to estimate the articulatory movements which support an acoustic speech signal. Within the acoustic–to–articulatory mapping framework, time frequency atoms had been also employed. The main focus of present work is estimating the relevant acoustic information, in terms of statistical association, for the inference of critical articulators position; in particular, those involved on...
