The Atlantic Forest is considered one of the world's biological diversity hotspots, and is increasingly threatened by the rapid destruction and fragmentation of its natural areas. The caddisflies (Trichoptera) of Itatiaia massif, an Atlantic Forest highland area, are inventoried and cataloged here. The catalog is based on examination of bibliographies, field work on many localities of Itatiaia ...

[1] Glaciological processes are modeled to investigate precipitation patterns and the resulting mass flux of snow and ice across Himalayan topography. Our model tracks the accumulation and ablation of snow and ice and the transport of snow and ice across the topography by glacier motion. We investigate high elevation precipitation on the Annapurna Massif by comparing the existing ice cover with...

We establish that the nonlinear dynamics of collisions between particles favors the charging of an insulating, friable, self-replicating granular material that undergoes nucleation, growth, and fission processes; we demonstrate with a minimal dynamical model that secondary nucleation produces a positive feedback in an electrification mechanism that leads to runaway charging. We discuss ice as a...

Management of the pancreatic remnant following pancreaticojejunostomy remains a technical challenge particularly when the pancreas is soft. A simple technique that consolidates the pancreas in preparation for pancreaticojejunostomy is described. Application of this technique in patients for whom a difficult anastomosis was anticipated has yielded good results.

A new wingless ground beetle, Calathus (Calathus) jakupicensis nov. sp. (type locality: subalpine zone of Karadzica Mt., Jakupica Massif, Macedonia) is described. The diagnostic characters of the species are defi ned and illustrated, making possible its recognition. The new species is eastern vicariant and adelphotaxon of C. (C.) ravasinii J. MÜLLER.

In view of growing interest in understanding how biodiversity affects ecosystem functioning, we investigated effects of riparian plant diversity on litter decomposition in forest streams. Leaf litter from 10 deciduous tree species was collected during natural leaf fall at two locations (Massif Central in France and Carpathians in Romania) and exposed in the field in litter bags. There were 35 s...

A number of voluminous, fine-grained, friable deposits have been mapped on Mars. The modes of origin for these deposits are debated. The feasibility for an origin by volcanic airfall for the friable deposits is tested using a global circulation model to simulate the dispersal of pyroclasts from candidate source volcanoes near each deposit. It is concluded that the Medusae Fossae Formation and E...

ance. Abdomen:?protuberant, flanks bulged out, shifting dullness and fluid thrill were both present. Genital organs showed no abnormality. Anus patent, admitting the tip of the little finger. There was no evidence of subcutaneous cedema in any part of the body. On opening the abdominal cavity about 10 ozs. of slightly yellowish, clear fluid was drawn out; no flakes of lymph were found. The peri...
