We report the first Hg(2+) selective hydrogelation by 4'-[4-(4-aminophenyl)phenyl]-2,2':6',2''-terpyridine. The gel showed remarkable response towards specific chemical agents such as benzo-18-crown-6 ether and K(+) which enabled extensive modulation of the gel morphology.

Driven by the benzo-21-crown-7/secondary ammonium salt recognition motif, a linear supramolecular polymer was formed from self-organization of a low-molecular-weight self-complementary monomer in chloroform. From this supramolecular polymer, nanofibers were obtained successfully via electrospinning.

Reaction of the deprotonated N-thiophosphorylated thiourea (4'-benzo-15-crown-5)NHC(S)NHP(S)(OiPr)(2) (HL) with NiCl(2) in aqueous EtOH leads to dark green [Ni(L-1,5-S,S')(2)]·2H(2)O crystals that were isolated by recrystallization from a mixture of CH(2)Cl(2) and n-hexane.

We report on the synthesis of a new hybrid material, i.e. benzo-18-crown-6 covalently linked to multi-wall carbon nanotubes, and its use in solid-state ion-selective electrodes both as a receptor and an ion-to-electron transducer. This new concept leads to potentiometric sensors with extremely high selectivity.

Novel linear supramolecular polymers were constructed by the orthogonal self-assembly of a heteroditopic monomer and a homoditopic monomer. The polymerization is driven by a combination of quadruple hydrogen bonding and benzo-21-crown-7 based host-guest complexation. The disassembly-assembly of these novel polymers could be reversibly switched by addition/removal of K(+).
