In this contribution the feasibility and performance of low-cost bidirectional single fibre links for analogue RF fibre-optic (FO) antenna feeding are investigated. Wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) allows transmission of uplink (λopt=1310nm) and downlink (λopt=1550nm) signals over one single standard fibre. Designs using low cost multiple quantum well Fabry-Pérot laser diodes (MQW FP LDs)...

The delivery oflaser energy to the coronary circulation by bare optical fibres may cause perforation of the vessel. Experimental studies have shown that this complication can be avoided if the optical fibre is fitted with a metal cap to prevent the potentially dangerous forward projection of the laser beam. This study was performed to assess the feasibility and short term effects of percutaneou...

Laser pulses excite superficial free nerve endings innervated by small-myelinated (Adelta) and unmyelinated (C) fibres. Whereas laser-evoked scalp potentials (LEPs) are now reliably used to assess function of the Adelta-fibre nociceptive pathways in patients with peripheral or central lesions, the selective activation of C-fibre receptors and recording of the related brain potentials remain dif...

Digitized-Radio over Fibre (DRoF) techniques provide higher dynamic range and are more robust against optical link impairments. In this paper, a fully-photonic DRoF system is proposed and its performance is investigated in an integrated system with an analogue Radio over Fibre (ARoF) system. In this simulation based evaluation, DRoF and ARoF systems performance in the presence of other channels...

A four-wavelength low-power continuous-wave frequency laser reference system has been realised in the 935.4-nm range for water vapour differential absorption lidar (DIAL) applications. The system is built around laboratory extended-cavity and DFB diode lasers. Three lasers are directly locked to three water vapour absorption lines of different strength, whereas the wavelength of the fourth lase...

A Raman fibre laser based on phase shifted DFB structures is modelled for the first time. Using parameters of realistic devices, the model predicts low-threshold and highly-efficient laser output. The change of position and width of the phase shift were found to have a substantial impact on laser performance.

This paper deals with communication using optical fibres. The transmission using high bandwidth can handle vast amounts of information, which can be further improved by reduction in fibre losses, increase in data rates and distances, development of optical sources and detectors compatible with fibres. The recent development in the area of fibre optic communication as well as the advances in dif...

Turbulence is a challenging feature common to a wide range of complex phenomena. Random fibre lasers are a special class of lasers in which the feedback arises from multiple scattering in a one-dimensional disordered cavity-less medium. Here we report on statistical signatures of turbulence in the distribution of intensity fluctuations in a continuous-wave-pumped erbium-based random fibre laser...

A well-known side-effect from fibre Bragg grating UV-fabrication is short wavelength attenuation, where irradiation with laser light, usually in the UV, generates both defect-induced absorption and scattering. These losses are especially problematic for high power optical fibre lasers operating at shorter wavelengths where resonant assisted coupling into the glass matrix through the rare earth ...
