Rupture segmentation arises from changes in fault geometry and strength. We use boundary element models of frictionless strike-slip fault segments to quantify how fault geometry and strength change earthquake surface offset distributions. Using these relationships between fault geometry, strength, and surface offsets, we can infer fault strength from the surface offsets in cases where the fault...

Robotic manipulators working in remote or hazardous environments require additional measures to ensure their usability upon the failure of an actuator. This work considers failure modes that result in an immobilized joint and uses the concept of worst-case dexterity to deene kinematic and dynamic fault tolerance measures for redundant manipulators. These measures are then used to specify the op...

This paper studies the kinematic geometry of general 3-RPR planar parallel robots with actuated base joints. These robots, while largely overlooked, have simple direct kinematics and large singularity-free workspace. Furthermore, their kinematic geometry is the same as that of a newly developed parallel robot with SCARA-type motions. Starting from the direct and inverse kinematic model, the exp...

Understanding the folding style of a fold-thrust belt is crucial to understand the nature and structural history of structures that may trap natural resources within the belt. In this research, the geometry and mechanism of a number of fault-related folds has been investigated based on field data and satellite image interpretations. The main study areas are: the Sohrevard and Ushtaniyan anticli...

The 21 May 2021 Maduo earthquake was the largest event to occur on a secondary fault in interior of active Bayanhar block north-central Tibetan plateau last twenty years. A detailed kinematic study helps us better understand seismogenic environments faults within block, and its relationship with block-bounding faults. In this study, firstly, SAR images are used obtain coseismic deformation fiel...

Shepard has supposed that the mind is stocked with innate knowledge of the world and that this knowledge figures prominently in the way we see the world. According to him, this internal knowledge is the legacy of a process of internalization; a process of natural selection over the evolutionary history of the species. Shepard has developed his proposal most fully in his analysis of the relation...

In analogy to valuation characterizations and kinematic formulas of convex geometry, we develop a combinatorial theory of invariant valuations and kinematic formulas for finite lattices. Combinatorial kinematic formulas are shown to have application to some probabilistic questions, leading in turn to polynomial identities for Möbius functions and Whitney numbers.

Abstract. Without properly accounting for both fault kinematics and observations of a faulted surface, it is challenging to create 3D geological models units. Geometries where multiple faults interact, the surface geometry significantly deviate from flat plane interfaces are poorly characterised by sparse datasets particular challenges. There two existing approaches incorporating into modelling...
