In this paper we study a system of equations concerning equilibrium positions of journal bearings. The problem consists of two surfaces in relative motion separated by a small distance filled with a lubricant. The shape of the inlet surface is circular, while the other surface has a more general shape. Our result shows the existence of at least one equilibrium by using degree theory.

This study is related to the fluctuation theory of electromagnetic fields, charges, and currents. The three-dimensional system under consideration is a semi-infinite conductor, modeled by the jellium, in vacuum. In previous theoretical studies it was found that the correlation functions of the surface charge density on the conductor decay as the inverse cube of the distance at asymptotically la...

Ultrafast photoinduced electron transfer preceding energy equilibration still poses many experimental and conceptual challenges to the optimization of photoconversion since an atomic-scale description has so far been beyond reach. Here we combine femtosecond transient optical absorption spectroscopy with ultrafast X-ray emission spectroscopy and diffuse X-ray scattering at the SACLA facility to...

SMIP94 Seminar Proceedings Abutment stiffnesses are determined directly from the earthquake motions recorded at the US 1011 Painter Street Overpass using a simple equilibrium-based approach without finite-element modeling of the structure or the abutment-soil systems. The calculated abutment stiffnesses, which include the effects of soil-structure interaction and nonlinear behavior of the soil,...

van der Waals (vdW) forces play a fundamental role in the structure and behavior of diverse systems. Because of development of functionals that include nonlocal correlation, it is possible to study the effects of vdW interactions in systems of industrial and tribological interest. Here we simulated within the framework of density functional theory (DFT) the adsorption of isooctane (2,2,4-trimet...

We discuss the relation between the Wasserstein distance of order 1 between probability distributions on a metric space, arising in the study of MongeKantorovich transport problem, and the spectral distance of noncommutative geometry. We first show that on Riemannian spin manifolds the two distances coincide. Then, on convex manifolds in the sense of Nash embedding, we provide some natural uppe...

We develop a field theoretical approach to the cold interstellar medium (ISM). We show that a non-relativistic self-gravitating gas in thermal equilibrium with variable number of atoms or fragments is exactly equivalent to a field theory of a single scalar field φ(~x) with exponential self-interaction. We analyze this field theory perturbatively and non-perturbatively through the renormalizatio...

This paper focuses on a one person game called Indian policeman’s dilemma (IPD). It represents the internal conflict between emotion and profession of a typical Indian police officer. We have ‘split’ the game to be played independently by different personality modules of the same player. Each module then appears as an independent individual player of the game. None of the players knows the exac...

The relaxation of helical structures very close to equilibrium is observed via transient 2D IR spectroscopy. An initial distribution of synthetically distorted helices having an unnatural bridge linking the 10th and 12th residues of an alanine-rich α-helix is released to evolve into the equilibrium distribution of α-helix conformations. The bridge constrains the structure to be slightly displac...

Abstract In the supermarket model there are n queues, each with a unit rate server. Customers arrive in a Poisson process at rate λn, where 0 < λ < 1. Each customer chooses d ≥ 2 queues uniformly at random, and joins a shortest one. It is known that the equilibrium distribution of a typical queue length converges to a certain explicit limiting distribution as n→∞. We quantify the rate of conver...
