The aim of the present study was to explore the histogenesis of metaplastic cells in the human uterine cervix. In a previous study we demonstrated that squamous cervical metaplasia expresses a unique set of cytokeratin polypeptides different from that expressed by the various normal epithelial elements of both the exo- and endocervix. It was thus proposed that the formation of squamous metaplas...
Chlamydia trachomatis causes a predominantly asymptomatic, but generally inflammatory, genital infection that is associated with an increased risk for HIV acquisition. Endocervical epithelial cells provide the major niche for this obligate intracellular bacterium in women, and the endocervix is also a tissue in which HIV transmission can occur. The mechanism by which CT infection enhances HIV s...
Mucosal epithelia of the human lower reproductive tract (vagina, cervix, and penile urethra) are exposed to sexually transmitted microbes, including Chlamydia trachomatis. The in vivo susceptibility of each tissue type to infection with C. trachomatis is quite distinct. CD1d is expressed on the surface of antigen-presenting cells, including mucosal epithelial cells, and interacts specifically w...
As a result of the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination program, the prevalence of precancerous dysplasia and invasive cervical cancer has substantially decreased. In this brief report, we present a case of a young patient who was diagnosed with in situ adenocarcinoma of the cervix. This 30-year-old female had completed the HPV vaccination after she became sexually active and has been undergo...
Six hundred one endocervical specimens were analyzed for Chlamydia trachomatis by the APTIMA Combo 2 assay and evaluated for columnar epithelial cell adequacy by direct fluorescent-antibody staining. With 5.5% positive adequate and 7.8% positive inadequate specimens (P=0.27), the study suggested no difference in positivity rates due to specimen adequacy when this amplified technology was used.
We developed and morphologically characterized a human genital mucosa explant model (endocervix and ectocervix/vagina) to mimic genital herpes infections caused by herpes simplex virus types 1 (HSV-1) and 2 (HSV-2). Subsequent analysis of HSV entry receptor expression throughout the menstrual cycle in genital tissues was performed, and the evolution of HSV-1/-2 mucosal spread over time was asse...
conclusions: nested pcr as a sensitive chlamydia trachomatis detection test and endocervical specimens has been offered to detect this bacterium in spontaneous abortion. besides, c. trachomatis screening among pregnant women can be suggested to prevent abortion. results: the number of intercourses per week and history of miscarriage can be known as the risk factors of abortion. frequency of c. ...
Tubal infertility and reproductive damage, preeclampsia and preterm births may potentially occur in many of the 50 million women who are annually infected with Chlamydia trachoma‐ tis [reviewed in 1; 24]. C.trachomatis infections of the genital tract are also reported to increase the risk of human immunodeficiency virus type 1(HIV-1) susceptibility and viral shedding in the genital tract either...
