THE PRESENCE of tissue-specific antigen in various mucins has been demonstrated in a number of studies (Bara et al., 1977; Hillermanns, 1962; Nairn et al., 1962). Antibodies to mucins from alimentary tract can be readily produced and shown by immunofluorescence to localize to endosecretory parts of the epithelial cells. More recently, Gold & Miller (1978) showed that, while common gastrointesti...

conclusions nucleic acid amplification tests (naats) are very appropriate in detection of infected individuals. detection techniques such as naats are independent of bacterial viability, and have a potential to limit false negative samples, therefore, in our country, the application of different laboratory diagnosis methods including naats with culture as gold standard for determination antimic...

BACKGROUND/AIM Diagnostic procedures during the detection of cervical intraepithelial lesions (CIN) are a combination of cytology, colposcopy, punch biopsy and endocervical curretage. An optimal therapeutic approach according to the distribution, size and grade of cervical lesions is the result of this diagnostic protocol. This study was carried out to assess reliability of the punch biopsy and...

OBJECTIVES Determine the ability of the Cobas 4800 assay to detect high-risk human papillomavirus (HrHPV) and high-grade cervical lesions when using cervico-vaginal samples applied to liquid medium and solid media cards compared to a direct cervical sample. METHODS Two cervico-vaginal specimens (pseudo self-collected) were obtained from 319 women. One was applied to an iFTA Card (FTA) then th...

This study assessed the utility of urine, vaginal, cervical, and rectal specimens for the detection of Mycoplasma genitalium in women by using our laboratory-developed PCR assay. The relative sensitivity was 85.7% for the vaginal swab specimen, 74.3% for the endocervical swab specimen, 61.4% for the urine specimen, and 24.3% for the rectal swab specimen.

We evaluated further the accuracy of the COBAS AMPLICOR (Roche) (CA) PCR-based system in detection of Chlamydia trachomatis and Neisseria gonorrhoeae in endocervical specimens. Endocervical specimens collected for any indication for testing for C. trachomatis and N. gonorrhoeae among a university hospital health system population were included. Testing for C. trachomatis was done by two PCR met...

First-void urine samples collected from sexually transmitted diseases (STD) clinic patients were examined by a nested polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and a commercial enzyme immunoassay (IDEIA Chlamydia) for the diagnosis of Chlamydia trachomatis urethritis or cervicitis. The primers for the PCR amplified a target in the major outer membrane protein (MOMP) gene in C trachomatis while the IDEIA ...

The cellular quality of the endocervical swab specimen used for the detection of Chlamydia trachomatis may dramatically impact the sensitivity of the diagnostic assay used. An evaluation of the adequacy of 319 endocervical swab specimens from women attending two inner-city sexually transmitted disease and family planning clinics, as well as five high school-based family planning clinics, was pe...
