Fluctuating barotropic flow over sills in stratified water is subjected to baroclinic wave drag and accompanying barotropic to baroclinic energy transfer. In fjords, this process has notable consequences, for instance, tidal retardation across fjord sills, damping of barotropic seiches and enhanced diapycnal mixing in the basin water. These may be computed from simple models only including loca...

Determination was made of step length, stride width, time factors and deviation in the center of pressure during up- and downslope walking in 17 healthy men between the ages of 19 and 34 using a force plate. Slope inclinations were set at 3, 6, 9 and 12 degrees. At 12 degrees, walking speed, the product of step length and cadence, decreased significantly (p less than 0.01) in both up- and downs...

The soil roughness at the field level is an easy visually perceptible notion, but difficult to describe numerically. The objective of this paper is to propose a method to establish quantitative and descriptive soil roughness indices. A measurement system was developed using a laptop-computer and a laser cell. The elevation data are measured on the ground along a square array. They are treated w...

in this paper, free convection in an inclined stepped chamber has been studied. one wall of this enclosure is kept cold and the opposite wall equipped with constant heat source. the remaining walls are maintained adiabatic. there is one adiabatic step on the bottom wall. the aim of the present study is to forecast the effect of raleigh number, slope of enclosure, step dimension, and heat source...

It is shown that laser evaporation of a solid target followed by adiabatic expansion can be used to produce cold beams of neutral small open shell molecules. LIF is applied to detect Cull (X~S), CH (X2II), Sill (X2II), CuO (X2II), and FeO (XSA). A production of 109-+ ~ molecules/sr in a single pulse is obtained for Sill. For a copper target, the optical emission of the jet plume is discussed.

Observations of stratification and currents between June 2007 and March 2009 reveal a strong overflow between 400and 570-m depth from the Panay Strait into the Sulu Sea. The overflow water is derived from approximately 400 m deep in the South China Sea. Temporal mean velocity is greater than 0.75 m s at 50 m above the 570-m Panay Sill. Empirical orthogonal function analysis of a mooring time se...

The baroclinic tidal regime of the fjord Loch Etive (Scotland) is studied. Analysis is performed on the basis of both in situ data and numerical simulations, with the use of a fully nonlinear nonhydrostatic fine-resolution model. It was found that the crest of the sill that separates Loch Etive into inner and outer parts is subjected to a supercritical flow regime with maximum Froude numbers in...

Estimation of the possible instability that may be encountered in the excavation slope(s) during the planning and application steps of the rock excavation processes is an important issue in geoengineering. In this paper, a modelling method is presented for assessing the probability of wedge failure involving new permanent or temporary slope(s) along the planned excavation dir...

INTRODUCTION A geostatistical approach to characterize MS-lesion patterns based on their geometrical properties is presented. METHODS A dataset of 259 binary MS-lesion masks in MNI space was subjected to directional variography. A model function was fit to express the observed spatial variability in x, y, z directions by the geostatistical parameters Range and Sill. RESULTS Parameters Range...

Edwards (1942), in a broad chemical and mineralogical study of dolerites in Tasmania, found variations in composition within the sills and dykes examined. He attributed these chang>es to fractional crystallization and gravitative differentiation in the cooling magma of the sills, similar to that which is postulated to have occurred in the Skaergaard intrusion of East Greenland and the Palisade ...
