How can the development of ideas in a scientific field be studied over time? We apply unsupervised topic modeling to the ACL Anthology to analyze historical trends in the field of Computational Linguistics from 1978 to 2006. We induce topic clusters using Latent Dirichlet Allocation, and examine the strength of each topic over time. Our methods find trends in the field including the rise of pro...
Shift-reduce parsing has been studied extensively for diverse grammars due to the simplicity and running efficiency. However, in the field of constituency parsing, shift-reduce parsers lag behind state-of-the-art parsers. In this paper we propose a semi-supervised approach for advancing shift-reduce constituency parsing. First, we apply the uptraining approach (Petrov, S. et al. 2010. In Procee...
Meteor 1.3: Automatic Metric for Reliable Optimization and Evaluation of Machine Translation Systems
This paper describes Meteor 1.3, our submission to the 2011 EMNLP Workshop on Statistical Machine Translation automatic evaluation metric tasks. New metric features include improved text normalization, higher-precision paraphrase matching, and discrimination between content and function words. We include Ranking and Adequacy versions of the metric shown to have high correlation with human judgm...
We describe our present system for language identification as a part of the EMNLP 2016 Shared Task. We were provided with the Spanish-English corpus composed of tweets. We have employed a predictor-corrector algorithm to accomplish the goals of this shared task and analyzed the results obtained.
This paper describes the HHU-UH-G system submitted to the EMNLP 2016 Second Workshop on Computational Approaches to Code Switching. Our system ranked first place for Arabic (MSA-Egyptian) with an F1-score of 0.83 and second place for Spanish-English with an F1-score of 0.90. The HHU-UHG system introduces a novel unified neural network architecture for language identification in code-switched tw...
We present a novel named entity recognition (NER) system, and its participation in the Emerging and Rare Entity Recognition shared task, hosted at the 2017 EMNLP Workshop on Noisy User Generated Text (W-NUT). With a specialized evaluation highlighting performance on rare, and sparsely-occurring named entities, this task provided an excellent opportunity to build out a newly-developed statistica...
This paper describes a novel summarization system, Classummary, for interactive online classroom discussions. This system is originally designed for Open Source Software (OSS) development forums. However, this new application provides valuable feedback on designing summarization systems and applying them to everyday use, in addition to the traditional natural language processing evaluation meth...
A fast growing area in Natural Language Processing is the use of automated tools for identifying and correcting grammatical errors made by language learners. This growth, in part, has been fueled by the needs of a large number of people in the world who are learning and using a second or foreign language. For example, it is estimated that there are currently over one billion people who are non-...
As the amount of information on the Web grows, the ability to retrieve relevant information quickly and easily is necessary. The combination of ample news sources on the Web, little time to browse news, and smaller mobile devices motivates the development of automatic highlight extraction from single news articles. Our system, NetSum, is the first system to produce highlights of an article and ...
