PURPOSE Radiographic arthrosis is a common sequela of elbow trauma. Few studies have addressed risk factors for radiographic arthrosis after elbow injury, especially in the long term. Data from multiple long-term follow-up studies of patients with surgically treated elbow fractures provided us with an opportunity to assess risk factors for long-term radiographic arthrosis after elbow injury. ...
Radial head fractures are the most common adult elbow fracture. Our ability to treat these fractures has improved with increased understanding of elbow biomechanics. Based on fracture type, possible treatment includes nonoperative management, open reduction and internal fixation, radial head resection, and replacement arthroplasty. Management and operative technique are discussed.
Paediatric elbow biepicondylar fracture dislocations are very rare injuries and have been only published in two independent case reviews. We report a case of 13 years old boy, who sustained this unusual injury after a fall on outstretched hand resulting in an unstable elbow fracture dislocation. Closed reduction was performed followed by delayed ORIF (Open Reduction and Internal Fixation) with ...
In patients with an elbow fracture dislocation the incidence of radial head fracture is 36%, where as coronoid process fractures occur in 13%, and olecranon fractures in 4% of patients. Combination of all these fractures with a 'terrible triad' is rarely reported in the literature. We describe a 40 year old lady involved in a polytrauma who had head injury, pnuemothorax and an open fracture dis...
The present study is a report of retrospective case series of stress fracture of the olecranon. Six patients presented posterior elbow pain in throwing in baseball and softball, but fracture was not diagnosed in radiographs. We detected stress fracture of the olecranon using computed tomographic (CT) scan and treated the patient with internal fixation with a headless cannulated double threaded ...
We illustrate a rare complex dislocation of the elbow involving a posterior ulno-humeral dislocation associated with open diaphyseal fracture of the ulna, radial shaft fracture, Type 1 coronoid fracture and neuropraxia of the deep branch of the radial nerve. The isolated ulno-humeral dislocation without radio-capitellar involvement, and ulnar diaphyseal fracture, makes this "reverse Monteggia" ...
Posteromedial dislocation of the elbow in children is an extremely rare injury. The current study describes four boys with posteromedial dislocation of the elbow associated with a displaced fracture of the lateral humeral condyle. The patients ranged in age from 6 to 12 years (average age, 9 years 6 months). Closed reduction of the elbow dislocation and open reduction of the lateral humeral con...
BACKGROUND Medial epicondyle fractures may occur in isolation or with associated elbow dislocation. In the absence of open fracture or fragment incarceration, nonoperative management with immobilization has been shown to result in generally successfully outcomes comparable with those reported after surgical fixation. However, no comparative investigation has assessed outcomes after nonoperative...
