Steel-lined pressure tunnels and shafts are used to convey water from the reservoir to the turbines in high-head hydroelectric power plants. An axisymmetrical multilayer model is often considered by engineers for the design of the steel liner. Stresses and deformations can then be computed with a closed-form analytical solution in isotropic rock. When the rock is anisotropic, the lowest elastic...

In this work, density functional theory within the framework of generalized gradient approximation has been used to investigate the structural, elastic, mechanical, and phonon properties of lutetium monopnictides in rock-salt crystal structure. The spin orbit coupling and Hubbard-U corrections are included to correctly predict the essential properties of these compounds. The elastic constants, ...

Resonant ultrasound spectroscopy (RUS) is a method whereby the elastic tensor of a sample is extracted from a set of measured resonance frequencies. RUS has been used successfully to determine the elastic properties of single crystals and homogeneous samples. In this paper, we study the application of RUS to macroscopic samples of mesoscopically inhomogeneous materials, specifically rock. Parti...

assessment of the correlation between rock brittleness and rock fracture toughness has been the subject of extensive research works in the recent years. unfortunately, the brittleness measurement methods have not yet been standardized, and rock fracture toughness cannot be estimated satisfactorily by the proposed indices. in the present study, statistical analyses are performed on some data col...

In this paper we study the propagation of acoustic waves in two dimensional oceans with porous-elastic seabeds. First we outline our results developed for three dimensional ocean with rigid bottom and a depth dependent index of refraction. Then we extend this problem to an ocean bed consisting of porous, elastic sediment, lying over an elastic rock substrata.

The mechanism and critical conditions of rock failure in underground coal mining processes have attracted great attention. Based on the origin and properties of radon gas, we propose that radon release from underground strata to the surface occurs in two stages, i.e., the formation of free radon and the migration of radon gas. Due to its optimal combination of efficiency and low background meas...

despite its numerous potential applications, two-dimensional monolayer graphyne, a novel form of carbon allotropes with sp and sp2 carbon atoms, has received little attention so far, perhaps as a result of its unknown properties. especially, determination of the exact values of its elastic properties can pave the way for future studies on this nanostructure. hence, this article describes a dens...

Unequal flaws are widespread in rock engineering, which the extensions induced by excavation and unloading main factors leading to engineering instability. Rock deformation failure essentially results of energy transmission. In order study influence flaw type angle on mechanical properties characteristics flawed mass, uniaxial compression tests were conducted using particle flow numerical analy...

We introduce a discrete element simulation for the hydraulic fracture process in a petroleum well which takes into account the elastic behavior of the rock and the Mohr-Coulomb fracture criterium. The rock is modeled as an array of Voronoi polygons joined by elastic beams, which are submitted to tectonical stresses and the hydrostatic pressure of the fracturing fluid. The fluid pressure is trea...

The objective of this study is to demonstrate the power of integrating rock physics theory, measurement and simulation to improve facies prediction in an unconventional limestone and shale reservoir. Reliable facies prediction is a challenge in unconventional reservoir characterization because of complex geological heterogeneities. Both deterministic and probabilistic approaches are commonly us...
