BACKGROUND 3,4-Methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA, ecstasy) misuse is associated with hyponatremia particularly in women. Hyponatremia is possibly due to inappropriate secretion of plasma arginine vasopressin (AVP). OBJECTIVE To assess whether MDMA increases plasma AVP and copeptin in healthy male and female subjects and whether effects depend on MDMA-induced release of serotonin and norepin...

Three cases of jaundice after ingestion of 3,4-methylenedioxymetamphetamine (MDMA), known as 'ecstasy', are reported and the complications associated with the misuse of this drug, which was initially misrepresented as 'safer than alcohol' are described. Ingestion of 'ecstasy' should be considered when investigating unexplained jaundice in younger patients.

MDMA (3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine) was first used as a legal adjunct to psychotherapy in the 1970s. By the early 1980s, "Ecstasy" had become a tiny part of the recreational American drug scene, and was ultimately criminalized in 1986. For a decade use continued, but remained quiet. By the end of the 1990s, increased supply, demand, seizures of pills, arrests of distributors associated wit...
