We use a diffusion galactic model to analyze the end of the Galactic cosmic ray spectrum and its mixing with the extragalactic cosmic ray flux. We analyze the transition between Galactic and extragalactic components using two different extragalactic models. We compare the sum of the diffusive galactic spectrum and extragalactic spectrum with the available experimental data.

A theory is presented for the origin of the solar wind, which is based on the behavior of the magnetic field of the Sun. The magnetic field of the Sun can be considered as having two distinct components: Open magnetic flux in which the field lines remain attached to the Sun and are dragged outward into the heliosphere with the solar wind. Closed magnetic flux in which the field remains entirely...

The issue of the transport of dissolved nutrients and contaminants between the sediment in the bottom of a lake or reservoir and the body of water above it is an important one for many reasons. In particular the biological and chemical condition of the body of water is intricately linked to these mass transport processes. As the review by Boudreau (Rev Geophys 38(3):389–416, 2000) clearly demon...

Utilizing a multilayered composite approach, we have designed and constructed a new class of artificial materials for thermal conduction. We show that an engineered material can be utilized to control the diffusive heat flow in ways inconceivable with naturally occurring materials. By shielding, concentrating, and inverting heat current, we experimentally demonstrate the unique potential and th...

Ballistic–diffusive heat conduction, which is predominantly affected by boundaries and interfaces, will occur in nanostructures whose characteristic lengths are comparable to the phonon mean free path (MFP). Here, we demonstrated that interactions between phonons and boundaries (or interfaces) could lead to two kinds of slip boundary conditions in the ballistic– diffusive regime: boundary tempe...

Observations suggest that the timeand zonal-mean state of the extratropical atmosphere adjusts itself such that the so-called ‘‘criticality parameter’’ (which relates the vertical stratification to the horizontal temperature gradient) is close to one. T. Schneider has argued that the criticality parameter is kept near one by a constraint on the zonal momentum budget in primitive equations. The ...

An approach to integrate transport equations with fluxes being complex non-linear functions of physical parameters and their gradients, as it is predicted by theoretical models for micro-instabilities in plasma, is proposed. This approach operates without any splitting of the flux on diffusive and convective components normally involved in transport calculations. Introduction By considering tra...

Although the principal means to confirm indoor radon involves testing buildings, soil-based investigations are of value in identifying land areas that pose special concerns. Ideally, soil-based measurements would relate to radon production, diffusive transport, and convective transport into buildings. This paper briefly reviews technologies for measuring radon in soil gas, radon flux, and soil ...

The solution of space-fractional advection-dispersion equations (fADE) by random walks depends on the analogy between the fADE and the forward equation for the associated Markov process. The forward equation, which provides a Lagrangian description of particles moving under specific Markov processes, is derived here by the adjoint method. The fADE, however, provides an Eulerian description of s...
