Marine sediment with an input of particulate organic matter was incubated to simulate the early aging process. On the sediment after various incubation periods, adsorption and desorption tests were conducted for three selected organic micropollutants: bisphenol A (BPA), 17α-ethinyl estradiol (EE2), and phenanthrene (Phe). The results showed significant sediment organic matter (SOM) decompositio...

Due to the connection between enzymatic activity and degradation of different fractions of organic matter, enzyme assays can be used to estimate degradation rates of particulate and dissolved organic carbon in freshwater systems. The aim of this study was to quantify and model the enzymatic degradation involving the decomposition of macrophytes, describing temporal activity of cellulases (EC 3....

The survival of the faecal indicator organism Escherichia coli (E. coli) in recreational coastal water and sediment was investigated using laboratory based microcosms. Intact sediment cores from three distinct coastal sites in metropolitan Adelaide were inoculated with known concentrations of E. coli and incubated at temperatures of 10°C, 20°C and 30°C. Enumeration of E. coli in sediment and ov...

Several liters of an organic liquid scintillator (LS) loaded with Nd have been made. We report on performances of this scintillator in terms of optical properties, radiopurity and light yield for a Nd concentration of 6.5 g/l. A possible application to search for the Nd neutrinoless double beta (0νββ) decay with a 10-ton scale LS detector is discussed together with further improvements.

A novel optical sensor device monolithically integrated on a glass capillary is presented. Therefore, we took advantage of the ability to fabricate organic optoelectronic devices on non-planar substrates. The functionality of the concept is demonstrated by realizing an integrated oxygen sensor based on luminescence decay time measurement.

A photoluminescence (PL)-based oxygen and glucose sensor utilizing inorganic or organic light emitting diode as the light source, and polythiophene: fullerene type bulk-heterojunction devices as photodetectors, for both intensity and decay-time based monitoring of the sensing element's PL. The sensing element is based on the oxygen-sensitive dye Pt-octaethylporphyrin embedded in a polystyrene m...

The high molar absorption coefficient organic D-π-A dye C220 exhibits more than 6% certified electric power conversion efficiency at AM 1.5G solar irradiation (100 mW cm(-2)) in a solid-state dye-sensitized solar cell using 2,2',7,7'-tetrakis(N,N-dimethoxyphenylamine)-9,9'-spirobifluorene (spiro-MeOTAD) as the organic hole-transporting material. This contributes to a new record (6.08% by NREL) ...

Femtosecond electric-field-assisted pump-probe measurements are a new approach to the study of fundamental processes within organic optoelectronic devices. Here we report a detailed study of organic light-emitting diodes based on poly(9,9-dioctylfluorene), using both temporal and spectral information to investigate polaron generation, due to field-induced singlet dissociation, and their subsequ...

Optically heterodyne-detected optical Kerr effect experiments are applied to study the orientational dynamics of the supercooled ionic organic liquids N-propyl-3-methylpyridinium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide (PMPIm) and 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium tosylate (EMImTOS). The orientational dynamics are complex with relaxation involving several power law decays followed by a final exponential de...
