High thiophillicicity of the Au-nanoparticle (Au NP) surface leads to covalent attachment of D-penicillamine molecules to Au NPs to form biocompatible D-penicillamine conjugated Au NPs. The latter are highly water-dispersible, exhibit no cytotoxicity, and can readily penetrate the cell membrane to target intracellular free copper ions for selective copper detoxification in the presence of the o...

Red cell aplasia developed in a case of Wilson's disease following an increase in D-penicillamine dosage after 14 years' treatment. In vitro study of the effect of D-penicillamine on 59Fe incorporation by marrow cells did not suggest that the patient's erythropoiesis was particularly sensitive to D-penicillamine or determine the mechanism of drug toxicity. However, three weeks after the drug wa...

D-Penicillamine, a reducing and chelating agent used in the treating of rheumatoid arthritis, was tested for its effects of polymorphonuclear leukocyte chemotaxis, phagocytosis, and lysosomal enzymes. beta-Glucuronidase release from polymorphonuclear leukocytes after phagocytosis of latex particles was not affected by D-penicillamine at concentrations ranging from 25 to 400 mg/liter. No direct ...

Two patients with rheumatoid arthritis developed evidence of hepatotoxicity while receiving D-penicillamine. Both recovered after withdrawal of the drug. These cases and a review of the literature suggested that hepatotoxicity, though rare, should be added to the list of adverse reactions to D-penicillamine.

A 68 year old man with rheumatoid arthritis developed marrow aplasia during D-penicillamine treatment. Recovery of granulopoiesis and erythropoiesis was ineffective with features of a secondary sideroblastic anaemia. Absence of megakaryopoiesis persisted. Therapeutic measures failed, and the patient finally died. These events illustrate a haematopoietic stem cell injury induced by D-penicillamine.

In view of the claim that alclofenac has a specific antirheumatoid action a detailed biochemical study has been made over a 6-month period of 2 groups of patients with rheumatoid arthritis receiving either alclofenac or D-penicillamine for the first time. We found no biochemical evidence and little clinical evidence that alclofenac had a 'penicillamine-like' effect in rheumatoid arthritis.

Cross-sectional and longitudinal studies have been carried out to determine the incidence and clinical significance of eosinophilia in patients taking penicillamine for rheumatoid arthritis. In a cross-sectional study of 204 patients eosinophilia was found with equal frequency during treatment with penicillamine, gold, and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. A longitudinal study of 89 patient...
