The first enantiomerically pure 2,2'-bipyridine-based cryptand is reported. Complexation of this macrobicyclic ligand with the trivalent lanthanoid cations Yb and Lu produces enantiomerically and diastereomerically pure cryptates in solution. The Yb cryptate shows near-IR photoluminescence with lifetimes of up to τ = 29.8 μs in CD3OD.

In the crystal structure of the title compound, C(33)H(39)N(3)O(10)·C(3)H(6)O, the acetone mol-ecule is encapsulated into the cavity of the cryptand and fixed by two N-H⋯O and one C-H⋯O hydrogen bond. C-H⋯O and C-H⋯N inter-actions link neighbouring cryptands. The dihedral angles between the pyridine ring and the benzene rings are 86.47 (17) and 85.53 (13)°.

The title salt, [K(C18H36N2O6)][Co(CO)4], is an example of a classical carbonyl-metalate. The asymmetric unit contains one cation and one tetrahedral anion, both in general positions. Based on comparison of the four carbonyl C-O bond lengths and C-Co-C angles, the anion is unperturbed by the cation, which is normal for an alkali metal fully encased by a cryptand cage.
