We evaluated the presence of air contamination with carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii (CRAB) in medical units where patients with CRAB pneumonia were hospitalized, and in Obstetrics and Gynecology units with open-air ventilation in-patient settings. There was no evidence of CRAB contamination in either of the units.
OBJECTIVES In this study, multilocus sequence typing (MLST) was used to describe the genetic backgrounds of carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii (CRAB) and carbapenem-susceptible A. baumannii (CSAB) from multiple cities of China. METHODS One hundred and fifty-two CRAB and 74 CSAB isolates obtained from 16 cities of China were selected for molecular characterization by MLST. eBURST was...
OBJECTIVES To study snow crab sensitization, occupational allergy and asthma in the snow crab industry in Greenland, as high rates have been found in Canada, but no reports have emerged from the same industry in Greenland. STUDY DESIGN Pilot survey. METHODS Twenty workers (19 of Inuit and 1 of other origin) in a snow crab (Chionoecetes opilio) and Atlantic shrimp (Pandalus borealis) process...
BACKGROUND Carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii (CRAB) is associated with nosocomial infections worldwide. Here, we used phage as a potential agent to evaluate the efficacy of daily cleaning practices combined with a bacteriophage-containing aerosol against CRAB. METHODS A two-phase prospective intervention study was performed at a 945-bed public teaching hospital. From March to Decem...
The effects of the acanthocephalan parasites Profilicollis antarcticus and P. novaezelandensis on the fecundity and mortality of three species of shore crab (Macrophthalmus hirtipes, Hemigrapsus edwardsi and H. crenulatus) are examined. The number of eggs produced by female crabs was strongly correlated (all P<0.05) with carapace width; parasite load was not a significant determinant of female ...
The crustacean exoskeleton presents several functions including the stabilization of the whole body of the animal, resistance to mechanical loads, and protection to the environment and against predators [1]. The structure of crustacean exoskeleton consists of an organic matrix constituted by α-chitin, proteins and carotenoid pigments and an inorganic fraction where calcium carbonate is the main...
Prawn, shrimp and crabs sold in Japan are mostly imported from overseas. Detection of irradiated crustaceans is very important for quality assurance. In this study, we used ESR to detect radiation-induced radicals after irradiation of prawn, shrimp and crabs of major species. No radiation-induced radicals were detected in prawn (black tiger prawn) or shrimp (white leg shrimp). Radiation-induced...
A model of an accelerated expansion of the Crab Nebula powered by the spinning-down Crab pulsar is proposed, in which time dependence of the acceleration is connected with evolution of pulsar luminosity. Using recent observational data, we derive estimates of the Crab neutron-star moment of inertia. Correlations between the neutron star moment of inertia and its mass and radius allow for rough ...
typing analysis, which would contribute to the knowledge of the molecular epidemiology of CRAB isolates. Although many distinct sequence types of CRAB, including some international clones, have been identified in Brazil, there still are no data from this Brazilian region. In summary, we demonstrated the persistence of a few clones responsible for endemic levels of CRAB isolates in hospitals in ...
The possible involvement of opioid system in the regulation of hemolymph glucose level in the fresh water crab Oziotelphusa senex senex Fabricius, was investigated. Opioid agonist and antagonist was also used in addition to methionine-enkephalin itself. Injection of the opioid, methionine-enkephalin and FK 33-824 significantly elevated hemolymph glucose level. In contrast, injection of naloxone...
