PURPOSE To examine the physiological optics of photorefractive corneal surgery and to study the effect on glare production of the optical zone diameter. METHODS An optical analysis computer program was used to generate rays that define the edge of the optical zone for any given pupil size and glare-free field. RESULTS The optical zone diameter must be based on the postoperative corneal curv...

purpose: to study the effect of phototherapeutic keratectomy (ptk) in the treatment of various superficial corneal pathologies. methods: we performed a nonrandomized, prospective study on patients who presented with superficial corneal disease and/or poor vision. fifty eyes were included recurrent corneal erosion (rce): 25 eyes, salzmann’s nodular degeneration: 9 eyes, spheroidal degeneration: ...

PURPOSE To compare reinnervation in recombinant human collagen-based corneal substitutes with allografts during a 1-year postimplantation follow-up period in pigs. A retrospective comparison to innervation in porcine collagen-based biosynthetic grafts was also performed. METHODS Pigs received a corneal allograft or a substitute made of either recombinant human type-I or -III collagen. In vivo...

PURPOSE To investigate the interaction between corneal, internal, and total wavefront aberrations (WAs) and their influential factors during orthokeratology (OK) treatment in Chinese adolescents. METHODS Thirty teenagers (n = 30 eyes) were enrolled in the study; spherical equivalent refraction (SE), corneal curvature radius (CCR), central corneal thickness (CCT), WAs, and the difference in li...

PURPOSE Keratan sulfate proteoglycans (KSPGs) in the corneal stroma are believed to influence collagen fibrillar arrangement. This study was performed to investigate the fibrillar architecture of the corneal stroma in mice homozygous for a null mutation in the corneal KSPG, mimecan. METHODS Wild-type (n = 9) and mimecan-deficient (n = 10) mouse corneas were investigated by low-angle synchrotr...

Corneal neovascularization causes deterioration of visual acuity and increases surface irregularities. Various techniques have been employed to help control the progression of corneal neovascularization; bevacizumab is a medication that targets the specific pathway of corneal neovascularization. The Boston Ocular Surface Prosthesis (BOSP) is a large diameter contact lens that aids in maintainin...

Posterior microphthalmos is a rare condition which is characterized by the disproportionately small size of the posterior segment of the eye. The corneal diameter, central anterior chamber depth and the lens thickness are all within the normal range. We present a case of posterior microphthalmos with all normal anterior segment measurements except increased corneal curvature.
