Signs, which are the domain of inquiry in semiotics, have a complex ontology. Apart from being used—adequate knowledge provided—by communicators, and recognized as being decomposable into smaller elements and aggregatable to larger structures, they are also meant to be understood. This is a consequence of their manifold identity as compound physical objects with real world extensions in space-t...
Computational linguistics and corpus linguistics are closely-related disciplines: they both exploit electronic corpora, extract various kinds of linguistic information from them, and make use of the same methods to acquire this information. Moreover, both were heavily affected by "paradigm shifts" from the prevailing empiricism of the 1950s, to rationalism, then back again with a revival of emp...
Constraint programming is a programming paradigm that was originally invented in computer science to deal with hard combinatorial problems. Recently, constraint programming has evolved into a technology which permits to solve hard industrial scheduling and optimization problems. We argue that existing constraint programming technology can be useful for applications in natural language processin...
The topic to be discussed by the panel is new and at present very much under debate. Paralleli~im is developed in a large variety of approaches. The panel will make an attempt to clarify the underlying concepts, the differences <~f approach, the perspectives and general tt!ndencies, and the difficulties to be expected. Some differences of approach will be iAlustrated with examples from the work...
The present paper is an attempt to justify and explain the direction of present research in Ottawa (Carleton University and also University of Ottawa) on Computational manipulation of speech. Our actual realizations are not necessarily original; rather, we are trying to make use of the findings of other workers, assembling them, however, in a different way, on the basis of a novel conception of...
We describe course adaptation and development for teaching computational linguistics for the diverse body of undergraduate and graduate students the Department of Linguistics at the University of Texas at Austin. We also discuss classroom tools and teaching aids we have used and created, and we mention our efforts to develop a campus-wide computational linguistics program.
