The Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI) has developed a 21-inch (54 cm) diameter docking AUV and companion docking station. This program resulted in four consecutive successful autonomous homing and docking events in the open ocean, which included downloading data, uploading a new mission plan, recharging the battery, and complete power cycling of the AUV. We describe the design, s...
This paper describes a learning companion system called Integration-Kid in the domain of learning indefinite integration. A learning companion system is an intelligent tutoring system of a new breed. Apart from the teacher, a learning companion models after an additional agent, called the learning companion. The learning companion acts as a companion for the human student in learning. Thus the ...
In mystical ethics, some virtues have a foundational role in relation to other virtues; that is, other virtues are in some ways dependent on, conditional to, or rooted in them. This is a gradational concept, and therefore one can speak of foundational and more foundational among foundational virtues in mysticism. Honesty is the most foundational virtue in mystical ethics, and other virtues are ...
The objective of this study was to evaluate body composition in small breeds of dogs as compared with larger breeds. Body composition by Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DEXA) was performed in 34 adult small and toy breed dogs. Results were compared with data obtained from 41 Beagles and 6 Labrador retrievers. Body weight, bone density, total calcium, fat grams, lean grams and bone mineral con...
Unlike most existing work on traversable interfaces, we focus on the use of synthetic characters to accompany the user in Mixed Reality (MR) applications. We examine virtual companions as a promising means to design smooth transitions between different worlds and to avoid orientation problems. We propose a taxonomy to describe the spatial relationship between character and user which has an imp...
Frail older people can normally not be given round-the-clock care-giving assistance. During the time there is no other person around they must be independent. Electronic assistive technology (EAT) can increase an older person's independence in everyday life, but to do so it must be dependable. This paper examines issues of dependability for a special class of EAT software, virtual companions fo...

We study the model checking problem for logics whose semantics are defined using transitive Kripke models. We show that the model checking problem is P-complete for the intuitionistic logic KC. Interestingly, for its modal companion S4.2 we also obtain P-completeness even if we consider formulas with one variable only. This result is optimal since model checking for S4 without variables is NC-c...
