Plants that colonize new and/or transient habitats may find themselves ‘out on their own’ with very few individuals of the same species in the vicinity. Opportunities for outbreeding are then very restricted and it is therefore not surprising that many colonizing and pioneer species are self-fertile. Indeed, so common is this correlation that it is often assumed that all such species are mainly...

The diversity in the expression of Lewis antigens (Le) of 226 single colonies of Helicobacter pylori isolated from four regions of the stomach of eight adults is shown. Le(y) was expressed more in strains colonizing antrum than in strains colonizing fundus, whereas Le(x) was more common in fundus strains. cagA(+) strains were more associated with Le-negative strains.

Recent work on the Molicutes that associate with genital tract tissues focuses on four species that may be of interest in potential maternal, fetal, and neonatal infection and in contributing to adverse pregnancy outcomes. Mycoplasma hominis and Ureaplasma urealyticum have historically been the subject of attention, but Mycoplasma genitalis which causes male urethritis in addition to colonizing...

Proteus vulgaris belongs to the Enterobacteriaceae family, colonizing mainly gastrointestinal tract of animals, including humans. However, when there is some deregulation in host's immune system, this pathogen spreads, causing several clinical manifestations. Currently literature little discussed about virulence and resistance profile species. Thus, study aimed, through a review, describe main ...

ŽAnimals colonizing lightless subterranean habitats can no longer rely on visual signals to find mating partners. In the present study, we investigated the ability of males to recognize females in two surface and a cave dwelling population of a livebearing fish, Poecilia mexicana. In surface populations males discriminated between sexes with visual plus non-visual cues available and with visual...

All aerial plant surfaces are inhabited by diverse assemblages of microorganisms, including bacteria, fi lamentous fungi, yeasts, and algae. These organisms have profound effects on plant health and thus impact on the ecosystem (Lindow and Brandl, 2003). The yeasts form a major component of the population on leaves (Inácio et al., 2002). Leaf surfaces are colonized by members of several genera ...

In contrast to the Moon, Mars is rich in carbon, nitrogen, hydrogen and oxygen, all in biologically readily accessible forms such as carbon dioxide gas, nitrogen gas, and water ice and permafrost. Carbon, nitrogen, and hydrogen are only present on the Moon in parts per million quantities, much like gold in seawater. Oxygen is abundant on the Moon, but only in tightly bound oxides such as silico...
