Colloidal suspensions with free polymer coils which are larger than the colloidal particles are considered. The polymer-colloid interaction is modeled by an extension of the Asakura-Oosawa model. Phase separation occurs into dilute and dense fluid phases of colloidal particles when polymer is added. The critical density of this transition tends to zero as the size of the polymer coils diverges.
In the presence of geometric confinements such as topographically patterned surfaces, strong light fields, or channels the phase behavior and the dynamical properties of colloidal suspensions are strongly modified in comparison to the bulk properties. Because such geometric confinements play an important role in many physical, biological and chemical processes, investigations of the properties ...
The phase behavior of colloidal particles embedded in a binary fluid is influenced by wetting layers surrounding each particle. The free energy of the fluid film depends on its morphology, i.e., on size, shape and connectivity. Under rather natural assumptions a general expression for the Hamiltonian can be given extending the model of hard spheres to partially penetrable shapes including energ...
Computer simulations of colloidal suspensions are discussed. The simulations are based on the Langevin equations, pairwise interaction between colloidal particles and take into account Brownian, hydrodynamic and colloidal forces. Comparison of two models, one taking into account inertial term in Langevin equation and another based on diffusional approximation proposed in [D.L. Ermak, J.A. McCam...
Biological cells can be treated as composites of graded material inclusions. In addition to biomaterials, graded composites are important in more traditional materials science. In this paper, we investigate the electrorotation spectrum of a graded colloidal suspension in an attempt to discuss its dielectric properties. For that, we use the recently obtained differential effective dipole approxi...
The idealized mode-coupling theory (MCT) is applied to colloidal systems interacting via short-range attractive interactions of Yukawa form. At low temperatures, MCT predicts a slowing down of the local dynamics and ergodicity-breaking transitions. The non-ergodicity transitions share many features with the colloidal gel transition, and are proposed to be the source of gelation in colloidal sys...
The ionic composition and pair correlations in fluid phases of realistically salt-free charged colloidal sphere suspensions are calculated in the primitive model. We obtain the number densities of all ionic species in suspension, including low-molecular weight microions, and colloidal macroions with acidic surface groups, from a self-consistent solution of a coupled physicochemical set of nonli...
Fiber alignment is the defining architectural characteristic of discontinuous fiber composites and is dictated by shear-dominated processing techniques including flow-injection molding, tape-casting, and mold-casting. However, recent colloidal assembly techniques have started to employ additional forces in fiber suspensions that have the potential to change the energy landscape of the shear-dom...
Dense suspensions of multiarm star polymers are known to develop liquidlike microstructure, which has been attributed to the similarities between high functionality stars and colloidal particles interacting via soft, long ranged potentials. Recent experimental studies reported a counterintuitive solidification of suspensions with f=128 , upon increase of the temperature in marginal solvents. We...
