UNLABELLED Clostridial collagenases are among the most efficient degraders of collagen. Most clostridia are saprophytes and secrete proteases to utilize proteins in their environment as carbon sources; during anaerobic infections, collagenases play a crucial role in host colonization. Several medical and biotechnological applications have emerged utilizing their high collagenolytic efficiency. ...

BACKGROUND Peritoneal fibrosis (PF), a serious problem in long-term continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) patients, is characterized by extracellular matrix (ECM) accumulation which results from an imbalance between the synthesis and the degradation of ECM components. Previous studies have demonstrated that ECM synthesis is increased in human peritoneal mesothelial cells (HPMCs) unde...

Extracts from bovine nasal cartilage with 1 M-guanidinium chloride were fractionated by ultrafiltration. Gel chromatography of the low-molecular-weight material resolved three distinct fractions with inhibitory activity against (a) collagenases (22000 mol.wt.), (b) thiol proteinases cathepsin B and papain (13000 mol.wt.), and (c) trypsin and other serine proteinases (7000 mol.wt.).

OBJECTIVE Substantial evidence implicates interstitial collagenases of the matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) family in plaque rupture and fatal thrombosis. Understanding the compensatory mechanisms that may influence the expression of these enzymes and their functions, therefore, has important clinical implications. This study assessed in mice the relative effect of the 2 principal mouse collagena...

We have previously shown that stimulation of extracellular signal-regulated protein kinase (ERK) by bradykinin (BK) in murine inner medullary collecting duct (mIMCD)-3 cells is mediated by epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) transactivation. The mechanism of EGFR transactivation seemed to be novel, because it does not require phospholipase C, Ca(2+), calmodulin, protein kinase C, G alpha(i)...

Background: Proteolytic enzymes, especially collagenases, are used for digestion of extracellular matrix, cell isolation and primary culture. Because of the problems in purification and low amount of collagenases in bacterial or animal sources, it is important to find new sources of the enzymes. So, in the present study actinidin, a plentiful protein in kiwifruit was purified and a mixture of ...
