Coke-oven workers are exposed to dust and irritant gases. Therefore they are at risk of developing lung diseases including chronic bronchitis. Nonspecific bronchial hyperresponsiveness (BHR) has been advocated as a potential risk factor predisposing to the development of chronic bronchitis. In a previous study, we showed that prevalence of BHR was higher in retired coke-oven workers than in ret...

Samples of active coke, fresh and spent after cleaning flue gases from communal waste incinerators, were investigated. The outer layers of both coke particles were separately removed by comminution in a spouted bed. The samples of both active cokes were analysed by means of densities, mercury porosimetry, and adsorption technique. Remaining cores were examined to determine the degree of consump...

We describe a case of epileptic seizures after a massive intake of diet coke. Apart from the hyponatremia due to water intoxication the convulsions can be potentiated by the high dose of caffeine and aspartame from the diet coke. To our knowledge this is the first report of seizures due to excessive diet coke intake.

The mechanistic understanding of coke formation on zeolites is elusive, and we have developed a method to directly analyze the species through high-res mass spectrometry.

Abstract The effect of particle size as well coke formation on conversion intermediate chain length paraffins (C 6 –C 9 ) to the corresponding olefins was investigated a promoted Pt catalyst with model substance n ‐octane. Increasing leads pore diffusion limitations and thus reduction activity for paraffin octene selectivity caused by more pronounced consecutive products (aromatics, octadienes)...

Nanocrystal HZSM-5 zeolite aggregates with different SiO2/Al2O3 molar ratios were prepared under low temperature and were used to catalyze the conversion of methanol to propylene and butene. The coke location, coke content, and coke species deposited on HZSM-5 aggregates were investigated. The near-graphite carbon on the external surface of HZSM-5 zeolite (SiO2/Al2O3 molar ratio = 400) was dist...

During the production of coke, large quantities of coke oven gas are emitted. People who work on the top or on the sides of coke ovens are exposed to this oven gas, which contains a range of carcinogenic chemicals. To investigate the cancer risks under these work conditions, a retrospective study was undertaken. In total 11,399 former workers were enrolled in the study. Of these, 5639 had worke...

A factor analysis model with nonnegative constraints (FA) was used to apportion the sources of PAHs found in sediments of Lake Calumet and surrounding wetlands in southeast Chicago. Source profiles and contributions, with uncertainties, are determined with no prior knowledge of sources. The model includes scaling and backscaling of data with average PAH concentrations without sample normalizati...

A new method for the determination of the spatial distribution of metal surface area within bimodal micro-/meso-porous solids has been developed. This novel technique involves incorporating a nonane pre-adsorption stage between two successive chemisorption experiments. This method has been used to probe the distribution of platinum amongst the micropores and mesopores of a range of bi-functiona...

This work evaluates the effects of sulfide phase location on zeolite-containing catalysts in cyclohexene hydroconversion using infrared operando technique. Parallels between activity, product yield, and surface species changes with time stream under pyridine poisoning were assessed pure HY zeolite, sulfided NiMo/HY, NiMo/Al2O3, NiMo/Al2O3 + HY. Isomerization activity could be related to zeoliti...
