Studies of CO2 capture and storage (CCS) from coal-fired power plants typically assume a capture efficiency near 90%, although the basis for a particular choice usually is not discussed. Nor do studies systematically explore a range of CO2 capture efficiencies to identify the most cost-effective levels of CO2 control and the key factors that affect such levels. An exploration of these issues is...

A new type of imidazolium salt-modified porous hypercrosslinked polymer (BET surface area up to 926 m(2) g(-1)) was reported. These porous materials exhibited good CO2 capture capacities (14.5 wt%) and catalytic activities for the conversion of CO2 into various cyclic carbonates under metal-free conditions. The synergistic effect of CO2 capture and conversion was observed.

Global warming and climate change resulted from CO2 emissions have been increasingly observed to impact our daily life and damage our economy in recent human history. To deal with this grand challenge, carbon capture and storage (CCS) has been established as a key technology to curb CO2 emission from fossil-fueled power plants. The core of the CCS technology is to capture CO2 at emission source...

Since current technologies for capturing CO2 to fight global climate change are still too energy intensive, there is a critical need for development of new materials that can capture CO2 reversibly with acceptable energy costs. Accordingly, solid sorbents have been proposed to be used for CO2 capture applications through a reversible chemical transformation. By combining thermodynamic database ...

Life cycle impact assessment indicators are integrated for studying the process integration of renewable resources and CO2 capture and storage (CCS) in power plants. Besides the expected reduction in global warming potential (GWP), CCS induces energy and cost penalties. This paper presents a systematicmultiobjective optimisation framework for the optimal design of power plants with CO2 capture ...

The performance of two phenol-formaldehyde resin-based activated carbons prepared in our laboratory, as potential adsorbents for precombustion CO2 capture has been evaluated under static (adsorption isotherms) and dynamic (adsorption-desorption cycles conducted in a fixed bed) conditions. Most of the literature on CO2 capture with solid sorbents is based on equilibrium CO2 adsorption capacities...

Capture and sequestration of CO2 from fossil fuel power plants is gaining widespread interest as a potential method of controlling greenhouse gas emissions. Performance and cost models of an amine (MEA)-based CO2 absorption system for postcombustion flue gas applications have been developed and integrated with an existing power plant modeling framework that includes multipollutant control techn...

Carbon dioxide (CO2) emitted from conventional coal-based power plants is a growing concern for the environment. Chemical looping combustion (CLC), pre-combustion and oxy-fuel combustion are promising CO2 capture technologies which allow clean electricity generation from coal in an integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC) power plant. This work compares the characteristics of the above thr...

Uncontrolled massive release of the primary greenhouse gas carbon dioxide (CO2) into atmosphere from anthropogenic activities poses a big threat and adversely affects our global climate and natural environment. One promising approach to mitigate CO2 emission is carbon capture and storage (CCS), in which ideal adsorbent materials with high storage capacity and excellent adsorption selectivity ov...

Fundamental aspects and actual developments of selective CO2 capture from relevant sources (flue gas or air) by reversible physisorption are critically reviewed. Thermodynamic as well as kinetic principles of CO2 adsorption in the presence of other gases are linked to current approaches of materials development. Whilst hundreds or even thousands of porous materials have been evaluated for CO2 c...
