among the causes of headache, cerebral venous and/or dural sinus thrombosis (cvt) is an important challenge because of its variable clinical presentation, having negative brain ct in up to 30% of cases and unavailability of mri in some situations. on the other hand as d-dimer (dd) test has been reported to be a sensitive test for the exclusion of venous thromboembolism, we sought whether it cou...

Cerebral sinus venous thrombosis is an uncommon cause of stroke. Three factors usually predispose to venous thrombosis: hypercoagulability states, venous stasis, and blood vessel wall changes.1--3 In patients with thyrotoxicosis, the increased activity of factor VIII,4 amongst others, results in a hypercoagulability state and has been reported as being a factor which predisposes to cerebral sin...

The study was conducted to determine the clinical pattern and etiology of cerebral venous thrombosis in Iran. Records of all adult patients admitted with a clinical diagnosis and MRI of cerebral venous thrombosis from 1993 through 1999 in three major hospitals of Tehran, Iran were reviewed. 1. Intracerebral hemorrhage can follow an asymptomatic interval after a trauma and may be due to local or systemic coagulation abnormalities, necrosis of blood vessels in areas of brain injury, transient cerebral dysautoregulation, reduction of intracranial pressure either medically or surgically, or cerebral venous sinus thrombosis. 2. Cerebral venous sinus thrombosis may be easily overlooked ...

chronic venous thromboses were also more common than acute thrombosis. Squizzato et al.1 reported 13 cases of acute cerebral sinus venous thrombosis associated with thyroid disease. The most common etiology of hyperthyroidism was Graves--Basedow disease, and a hypercoagulability state and even vascular compression in the event of large goiter were suggested as a pathogenetic mechanism. In the r...

A 21 year college student came with a history of generalized tonic-clonic seizures. MR Venography revealed the presence of left sigmoid and transverse sinus thrombosis with secondary venous hemorrhagic infarcts. After thorough investigation into cause of thrombosis patient was found to have a heterozygous MTHFR A1298C mutation which was causing cerebral venous sinus thrombosis.

Although few patients with spontaneous intracranial hypotension develop cerebral venous thrombosis, the association between these two entities seems too common to be simply a coincidental finding. We describe two cases of spontaneous intracranial hypotension associated with cerebral venous thrombosis. In one case, extensive cerebral venous thrombosis involved the superior sagittal sinus and mul...

Thrombosis of the deep cerebral venous system in the absence of superficial sinus thrombosis is a very rare disease. The clinical and radiological findings can be diagnostically challenging due to the subtle appearances on computed tomography (CT) scan. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) examination is a preferred imaging modality to complement the CT findings for an accurate diagnosis of venous ...
