background and aim: about 20% of non-pregnant women aged 15 to 55 harbour candida albicans in the vagina .the aimed to determine the characterization of candida species isolated from women with vulvovaginitis candidates (vvc) of reproductive ages. methods: this descriptive study was conducted on 280 of who were selected for gathering samples by purposive sampling based on their history and char...

Susceptibilities to amphotericin B and fluconazole of 383 Candida species isolated from blood were determined. Candida albicans was the most common species (55.6%), followed by Candida parapsilosis (17.5%), Candida tropicalis (16.5%), Candida glabrata (5.2%), Candida guilliermondii (2.3%), and others (2.9%). All but three isolates, Candida ciferrii, C. tropicalis, and C. glabrata, one each, wer...

This study evaluated three differential media, CHROMagar Candida, BiGGY agar and Albicans ID2 agar, for the presumptive identification of yeast species. In total, 215 yeast isolates were included in the study. The sensitivity and specificity of CHROMagar Candida, BiGGY agar and Albicans ID2 agar for the detection of Candida albicans were 100% and 100%, 91% and 92.7%, and 99.2% and 92.7%, respec...

Candida ID agar allows identification of Candida albicans and differentiation of other Candida species. In comparison with CHROMagar Candida, we evaluated the performance of this medium directly from 596 clinical specimens. In particular, detection of C. albicans after 24 h of incubation was easier on Candida ID (sensitivity, 96.8%) than on CHROMagar (sensitivity, 49.6%).

The in vitro activity of a new water-soluble polyene, SPA-S-843, was evaluated against 116 strains of Candida, Cryptococcus, and Saccharomyces spp. and compared with that of amphotericin B. SPA-S-843 demonstrated better inhibitory activity against all of the yeasts examined and better fungicidal activity against Candida albicans, Candida glabrata, Candida krusei, and Candida tropicalis than did...

Oral leukoplakias are histopathologically-diagnosed as Candida leukoplakia or non-Candida leukoplakia by the presence or absence of hyphae in the superficial epithelium. Candida leukoplakia lesions have significantly increased malignant potential. Candida albicans is the most prevalent fungal species associated with oral leukoplakia and may contribute to malignant transformation of Candida leuk...

Candida species are responsible for the fourth most common nosocominal bloodstream infection. Xanthorrhizol, a sesquiterpene compound isolated from Curcuma xanthorrhiza Roxb. has been reported to have anticandidal activity. The aim of this study is to investigate the synergistic anticandidal effect of xanthorrhizol in combination with ketoconazole or amphotericin B against Candida albicans, Can...

The number of nosocomial blood stream infections due to Candida species has increased over the past few decades. In order to establish an infection, opportunistic pathogens have to evade the immune system, survive, divide in the host environment, and spread to other tissues. Proteinase and phospholipase secretion has been implicated as potential virulence factors for some Candida species respon...

Culture-based identification methods have been the gold standard for the diagnosis of fungal infection. Currently, molecular technologies such as real-time PCR assays with short turnaround time can provide desirable alternatives for the rapid detection of Candida microbes. However, most of the published PCR primer sets are not Candida specific and likely to amplify DNA from common environmental...
