In this study, we investigate phosphorus (P) and iron (Fe) cycling in sediments along a depth transect from within to well below the oxygen minimum zone (OMZ) in the northern Arabian Sea (Murray Ridge). Pore-water and solid-phase analyses show that authigenic formation of calcium phosphate minerals (Ca-P) is largely restricted to where the OMZ intersects the seafloor topography, likely due to h...
We describe two complementary methods to quantify the degree of burial of ligand and/or ligand binding site (LBS) in a protein-ligand complex, namely, the ‘cutting plane’ (CP) and the ‘tangent sphere’ (TS) methods. To construct the CP and TS, two centroids are required: the protein molecular centroid (global centroid, GC), and the LBS centroid (local centroid, LC). The CP is defined as the plan...
John J. Meyer* and James E. Byers Department of Zoology, University of New Hampshire, 46 College Road, Durham, NH 03824, USA *Corresponding: E-mail: [email protected] Abstract Although ecologists have speculated that sublethal predation can impact prey dynamics, consequences of these predator effects have seldom been experimentally tested. In softsediment marine communities, fishes crop extended ...
A study of the diagenetic evolution of sandstones from Panyu low-uplift in the Pearl River Mouth Basin was carried out to unravel the controls on shelf margin sandstone reservoir quality. The reservoir rocks, Oligocene volcanic clastic sandstones of the Zhuhai Formation, have a burial depth of 2765 to 3440 m. 70 samples were studied using the granulometric analyses, X-ray diffraction (XRD) anal...
Salvia verbenaca (wild sage) is a commonly cultivated herbal medicine plant, which is native to the Mediterranean climate regions of Europe, Africa, Asia and the Middle East. However, it has become an invasive species in semi-arid and arid regions of southern Australia. Two varieties are present in this region, var. verbenaca and var. vernalis, each of which can be distinguished by differences ...
where Eq. A1.1a is for dissolved species, and Eq. A1.1b is for solid species. Here, t is time, and x is the depth coordinate below the sediment–water interface. U is the advection (burial) velocity. Rj values are the rates of chemical and biochemical reactions, and nij is the stoichiometric coefficient of species i in reaction j. Q is the sediment porosity. The factor j is equal to (1 2 Q)r, wh...
Records of Neogene seawater chemistry and diagenesis in deep-sea carbonate sediments and pore fluids
Deep-sea pore fluids are potential archives of ancient seawater chemistry. However, the primary signal recorded in pore fluids is often overprinted by diagenetic processes. Recent studies have suggested that depth profiles of Mg concentration in deep-sea carbonate pore fluids are best explained by a rapid rise in seawater Mg over the last 10–20 Myr. To explore this possibility we measured the M...

In order to produce an accurate depth migration of a seismic line, one needs an accurate velocity model. This model should reflect the lithology and lithostatic load that the rocks have experienced through burial and deformation. If we understand the geometry of these rocks, and their behaviour upon deformation, we can produce a more accurate velocity model. Performing palinspastic restoration ...
