A kinetic description of Alfvén-cyclotron magnetic fluctuations for anisotropic electron-proton quasistable plasmas is studied. An analytical treatment, based on the fluctuation-dissipation theorem, consistently shows that spontaneous fluctuations in plasmas with stable distributions significantly contribute to the observed magnetic fluctuations in the solar wind, as seen, for example, in [S. D...

Many horse owners find round bales convenient, less labor intensive, and more affordable than other hay types, but report an inability to control horse BW gain and excessive hay waste. The objectives were to compare hay waste, hay intake, and payback of 9 round-bale feeders and a no-feeder control when used during horse feeding. Nine round-bale feeders were tested: Cinch Net, Cone, Covered Crad...

During 2006 and 2007, forages from 3 individual hay harvests were utilized to assess the effects of spontaneous heating on concentrations of fiber components, 48-h neutral detergent fiber (NDF) digestibility (NDFD), and in situ disappearance kinetics of NDF for large-round bales of mixed alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) and orchardgrass (Dactylis glomerata L.). Over the 3 harvests, 96 large-round b...

The problem of Buridan's Ass, named after the fourteenth century French philosopher Jean Buridan, states that an ass placed equidistant between two bales of hay must starve to death because it has no reason to choose one bale over the other. With the benefit of modern mathematics, the argument can be expressed as follows. Assume that, at time 0, the ass is placed at position x along the line jo...

The influence of the bacterial contamination of cotton dust on the development of pulmonary symptoms has been investigated. The pulmonary function of card room workers in 23 US cotton mills was tested before and after the Monday working shift. A significant relation was found between the delta FEV1.0 decrement and the vertical elutriator dust level in the different mills. An improved correlatio...

Three new species of oribatid mites of the genus Plonaphacarus, Plonaphacarus sidorchukae sp. nov., Plonaphacarus rybalovi sp. nov. and Plonaphacarus hamulus sp. nov., are described from Bale Mountains National Park (Afrotropical region, Ethiopia). Morphological and taxonomical remarks about Steganacarus (Steganacarus) sol and Steganacarus (Steganacarus) vestitus are presented.

With rabies emerging as a particular threat to wild canids, we report on a rabies outbreak in a subpopulation of endangered Ethiopian wolves in the Bale Mountains, Ethiopia, in 2003 and 2004. Parenteral vaccination of wolves was used to manage the outbreak.
