I review the nature of the diffuse cosmic ultraviolet background radiation. The ultraviolet background is the last frontier: all the other diffuse backgrounds have been examined, at least at some level. The ultraviolet background has only begun to be explored; it offers rich promise of new astrophysical knowledge.

Pseudocapsular exfoliation occurs in most races and countries but appears to be particularly common in Norway and in the Eastern European and Mediterranean countries. It is rare in American Negroes, only two cases having been reported (Gradle and Sugar, 1947), and in Negroes in the West Indies (Connell, I970), and has not been reported in Negroes elsewhere outside South Africa (Bartholomew, I97...

The distinct color ow of the qq ! qqH; H ! W + W ? process leads to suppressed radiation of soft gluons in the central region, a feature which is not shared by major background processes like t t production or q q ! W + W ?. For the leptonic decay of a heavy , it is shown that these backgrounds are typically accompanied by minijet emission in the 20{40 GeV range. A central minijet veto thus con...

Vehicle detection is an essential task in the intelligent transportation system, which will affects the performance of surveillance directly. This paper presents an approach to detect vehicle from a sequence of traffic images obtained from expressway scenes. Firstly, inter-frame difference method was used to choose some frames with small traffic flow, and then pixels detected as background are ...

Visual saliency is a cognitive psychology concept that makes some stimuli of a scene stand out relative to their neighbors and attract our attention. Computing visual saliency is a topic of recent interest. Here, we propose a graph-based method for saliency detection, which contains three stages: pre-processing, initial saliency detection and final saliency detection. The initial saliency map i...

ABSTRACTBackground: There are relatively rich uranium mines in regions of Saghand and Bafgh in Yazd province. This survey was carried out to provide a map of ambient gamma radiation of Yazd province and the probable effects of the existence of these mines on background radiation dose rates.Materials and Methods: The measurements of the outdoor and indoor–environmental exposures (including cosm...

Introduction: Background radiation is originated from environmental radioactive sources cosmicandterrestrial.Materials distribution onsurface of the earth and height from sea level are not the same at various points.Absorbed dose caused by them were different at various points. In this research, Background radiation level inoutdoor different areas of Ilam province was measured and effective dose...

all living organisms are exposed to ionizing radiation comprising cosmic rays coming from outer space, terrestrial nuclides occurring in the earth’s crust, building materials, air, water and foods and in the human body itself. the exposures are constant and uniform for all individuals everywhere including the dose from ingestion of 40k in food. cosmic rays are, more intense at higher altitudes,...

We introduce a performance evaluation methodology called Perturbation Detection Rate (PDR) analysis for measuring performance of foreground-background segmentation. It has some advantages over the commonly used Receiver Operation Characteristics (ROC) analysis. Specifically, it does not require foreground targets or knowledge of foreground distributions. It measures the sensitivity of a backgro...

A common method for real-time segmentation of moving regions in image sequences involves “background subtraction,” or thresholding the error between an estimate of the image without moving objects and the current image. The numerous approaches to this problem differ in the type of background model used and the procedure used to update the model. This paper discusses modeling each pixel as a mix...
